    Day shift, must be able to work 8,10 or 12 hour shifts after orientation.

     

    Job Summary: Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, performs the duties of a primary or secondary surgical technologist in surgical procedures.

     

    Minimum Education: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) or by the State.

     

    Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). CPR certification.

     

    Work Experience: Certified Surgical Tech level II for 2 or more years within SFHS and ability to meet additional criteria as required by CST clinical ladder.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation and ability to prepare instrumentation set based specialties. Ability to function within multiple specialty areas as a resource. Demonstrated ability to precept team members as needed.

     

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Creates and maintains a sterile field; anticipates and provides instrumentation and supplies necessary to perform surgery. Facilitates patient flow through case turnover. Performs environmental activities to maintain asepsis of operating room. Anticipates needs in instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to technique procedure, and special requirements. Maintains correct sponge, needle, and instrument count with registered nurse and reports discrepancies as policy requires. Demonstrates competency in multiple specialty team cases and serves as a preceptor. Functions as a specialty resource person utilizing this expertise and demonstrates advanced technical expertise. Evaluates and recommends changes in practices consistent with aseptic techniques. Evaluates surgeon's preference cards, specialty instrument sets, and makes recommendations for change. Helps to develop new procedures and new instrument sets consistent with the evolution of surgery. Assists surgical team as primary or secondary surgical technologist when directed by a registered nurse. Demonstrates expanded role by second circulating under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and may operate lasers or help with other equipment needs. Participates in unit operational development by serving on a committee and presenting in-service education as needed. Participates in department CQI, problem-solving and cost reduction efforts. Available to take and respond to emergency call, if applicable.

     

    Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decisions involving non-routine problems under general supervision.

     

    Working Relationships: Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise). Leads others in same work performed (does not supervise). Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal/external customers. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at director level or above.

     

    Special Job Dimensions: Responds to and must take emergency call, trauma ready nights, weekends and holidays, if applicable.
