The City of Norfolk’s Department of Human Services (NDHS) provides a wide range of essential services to its citizens. These services are crucial in supporting the wellbeing of the community and ensuring that all citizens have access to the resources they need. NDHS is committed to providing such comprehensive support to its citizens.
The Norfolk Juvenile Detention Center (NJDC) is a secure facility which houses juveniles who are ordered to be detained pursuant to the Code of Virginia. The NJDC provides a variety of programs and services to meet the needs of the youth who are detained. These services are provided in a manner that ensures public safety yet provides appropriate services to prepare the youth to re-enter the community. During their stay at the center, the youth are provided an educational program by the Norfolk Public School system. The youth have the opportunity to acquire academic credits, attain a GED, and address other educational needs.
The NJDC is seeking to hire a Support Technician. This position will primarily work in a detention center control room, answering phone calls and public inquiries, maintaining juvenile detention records, preparing reports, and supporting staff and resident management systems.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $40,688.00 - $46,791
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Greeting visitors, scheduling appointments and meetings, coordinating travel arrangements, maintaining and retrieving files, distributing calendars and work schedules, maintaining and ordering office supplies, notifying other agencies of information, answering and directing phone calls and resolving issues, entering data into the computer, processing various plans, keeping various logs of information, preparing various reports, maintaining databases, preparing correspondence and reports, picking up and delivering documents, typing legal correspondence and documents, researching documents as requested, processing incoming mail, processing paperwork, and completing paperwork.
+ Answering and directing telephone inquiries, conduct research as requested. Processes paperwork, maintains files, type documents and correspondences, compiles reports, sorts and distributes mail, orders office supplies.
+ Provides clerical support for emergency storm clean-up teams.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
One year of general office work experience in a juvenile detention center is preferred. A bachelor's degree or above may substitute work experience (as approved by the department).

+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
