    Position Summary

    The Vice President, Chief Data Officer (CDO) provides enterprise leadership for data strategy, governance, and analytics across the healthcare system. This senior executive drives the vision, architecture, and execution of an integrated data ecosystem that fuels clinical, operational, and financial excellence. Partnering with executive, clinical, and business leaders, the CDO transforms data into actionable intelligence that improves outcomes, enhances efficiency, ensures revenue integrity, and enables strategic decision-making.

     

    The role focuses on leveraging Vizient analytics for benchmarking and performance improvement and AWS/Redshift as the enterprise cloud data and analytics platform, while advancing digital enablement, unlocking value from analytics, and scaling trustworthy AI to deliver measurable improvements in quality, access, experience, growth, and cost.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Enterprise Data Strategy and Value Creation

    • Define and execute a multi-year enterprise data and analytics strategy that treats data as a strategic asset across the continuum of care.

    • Develop the organizational structure, roadmap, and governance model to support data-driven transformation across clinical, operational, and financial domains.

    • Drive initiatives that unlock measurable economic and clinical value from data—reducing waste, optimizing resource allocation, and improving revenue cycle performance.

    2. Data Governance and Compliance

    • Design, implement, and enforce a comprehensive Data Governance framework (policies, standards, and procedures) to ensure data integrity, consistency, privacy, and compliance.

    • Lead the creation of a unified data catalog and stewardship model to ensure accuracy, transparency, and accessibility of critical datasets.

    3.Data Quality, Trust, and Stewardship

    • Institute data stewardship, metadata management, and data quality monitoring programs aligned with HIPAA, CMS, and ONC regulations to ensure clinicians and leaders can trust data used for decision-making.

    • Oversee ongoing data validation, lineage tracking, and master data management processes to maintain reliability and consistency.

    4. Modern Data Architecture and Cloud Enablement

    • Direct the modernization of the enterprise data architecture including cloud data platforms, data lakes, and data models built on AWS/Redshift.

    • Lead the cloud-first strategy for data science, analytics, and AI/ML initiatives—ensuring scalability, security, and real-time analytics capabilities.

    5. Analytics, AI, and Innovation

    • Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of advanced analytics and AI/ML solutions—from ideation to deployment and performance monitoring.

    • Champion data-driven innovations in clinical prediction, operational efficiency, supply chain optimization, and patient flow management.

    • Establish and operationalize a Business Intelligence Center of Excellence (BICOE) to standardize reporting, visualization, and insight generation across the system.

    6. Ethical and Trustworthy AI

    • Develop and enforce standards for Ethical and Trustworthy AI, ensuring all models are transparent, explainable, fair, and continuously monitored for bias or drift.

    • Ensure all analytics and AI initiatives adhere to ethical, regulatory, and privacy standards, promoting accountability and public trust.

    7. Data Democratization and Culture

    • Implement self-service analytics tools and governance-controlled data access to empower operational, clinical, and research teams.

    • Promote a data-literate and insight-driven culture, embedding analytics in everyday decision-making.

     

    Data Architecture and Platforms

    Enterprise Data Architecture (AWS / Redshift)

    • Oversee the design, build, and optimization of the AWS cloud-based data lake and Redshift warehouse architecture to enable secure, scalable, and high-performance analytics.

    • Ensure seamless integration of data across EHR (Epic), ERP (Oracle), CRM, and clinical/ancillary systems into a unified enterprise data fabric.

    • Partner with Information Security to enforce robust data protection, encryption, and access control across AWS environments in alignment with HIPAA and system cybersecurity policies.

    • Drive adoption of modern, serverless data pipelines and AI/ML enablement using AWS Glue, S3, SageMaker, and QuickSight for predictive and prescriptive analytics.

    Vizient Data Integration & Benchmarking Excellence

    • Lead the integration of Vizient data assets—including the Clinical Data Base (CDB), Operational Data Base (ODB), Supply Chain Benchmarking, and Quality & Safety metrics—into the enterprise AWS/Redshift warehouse.

    • Oversee data extraction, transformation, and automation pipelines to harmonize Vizient data with internal Epic and Oracle ERP datasets, ensuring accuracy and consistency in enterprise reporting.

    • Collaborate with Vizient data teams to ensure submission accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with enterprise-defined key performance indicators (KPIs).

    • Partner with Quality, Finance, and Clinical Operations to leverage Vizient analytics for:

    o Clinical performance benchmarking against national peers.

    o Cost-per-case and service-line profitability analysis.

    o Physician and service-line performance dashboards.

    o Quality improvement initiatives (readmissions, LOS, mortality, cost avoidance).

    • Utilize Vizient’s Value Intelligence Suite (VIS) and Clinical Data Base (CDB) tools to identify opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency gains, and clinical outcome improvements.

    • Develop internal Vizient Performance Portals and dashboards for executives, service line leaders, and operational teams to visualize trends and performance.

    • Ensure regular participation in Vizient benchmarking collaboratives, cohorts, and performance improvement networks to bring best practices into the organization.

    • Partner with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to align Vizient analytics with clinical quality and safety priorities such as reducing hospital-acquired conditions and variation in care.

    • Integrate Vizient scorecards and KPIs into board and executive leadership reporting, ensuring transparency, accountability, and alignment with organizational goals and annual operating plans.

    Leadership & Organizational Change

    • Serve as a primary executive leader and advocate for data-driven culture and digital transformation across all clinical and administrative functions.

    • Build, mentor, and lead high-performing, cross-functional teams spanning data science, product management, digital engineering, and data governance.

    • Partner with clinical and operational leadership to prioritize initiatives that drive the highest measurable impact on the Quadruple Aim (better care, lower cost, improved patient experience, and improved clinician experience).

     

    Salary range: $297,199 - $555,711 base only; excludes all incentives.

     

    Qualifications and Requirements

     

    Education & Experience

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Business, or a related field is required.

    • An MBA or advanced degree in a relevant technical or quantitative field is strongly preferred.

    • Minimum of 15+ years of progressive experience in technology, data science, or digital product leadership roles.

    • Minimum of 7+ years in a director or senior executive role overseeing large-scale digital transformation and data/analytics strategy.

    • Significant experience within a complex health system or large healthcare organization is essential.

     

    Required Skills & Competencies

     

    • Deep Expertise in Healthcare Data: Thorough understanding of clinical data (EHR/EMR, claims, HIE), healthcare regulatory landscape (HIPAA, HITECH), and industry trends.

    • Advance Expertise in leveraging Vizient's Quality and Accountability Study and the Clinical Data Base (CDB) to drive strategy. This includes translating Vizient's requirements, data definitions, and benchmarks into executable digital and data strategies, and using internal data to demonstrably improve performance across Vizient's composite measures while effectively communicating the impact to clinical and executive leadership. Experience with Vizient’s Operational Data Base (ODB) and other data and analytics tools is a must.

    • Executive Presence & Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts and strategic vision to executive leadership, boards of directors, clinicians, and technical teams.

    • Strategic & Business Acumen: Proven track record of linking digital/data strategy to measurable business outcomes (ROI, cost savings, quality improvement).

    • Technical Leadership: Fluency in modern data architecture (cloud data lakes/warehouses), AI/ML methodologies, agile product development, and API-driven integration.

    • Change Management: Demonstrated success in leading large-scale organizational and cultural change programs related to data governance and digital adoption
