Description of Work Unit
The CVMBS Marketing and Communications team collaborates with college leadership and cross-campus partners to develop, execute, and manage marketing, content, and storytelling strategies that support the college’s long-term strategic plan. Their efforts build and strengthen key stakeholder relationships, enhance reputation, and inform, inspire, engage, and influence the many audiences that contribute to the long-term growth and sustainability of the college and its affiliated units, including CSU’s Veterinary Health System.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the CVMBS Writer will create clear, compelling content designed to inform, inspire, engage, and influence core college audiences, including faculty and staff, current and prospective students, donors, community members, industry organizations, and health system clients and veterinarian partners. They will be primarily responsible for writing short- and long-form journalistic-style content and may be asked to contribute additional content including but not limited to emails, newsletters, web copy, and other marketing collateral. They will collaborate with other members of the CVMBS Marketing and Communications team to develop high-impact communications that advance the college’s strategic priorities.
Position Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in creative writing, journalism, communications, or related major by hire date.
+ Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, proofreading, and key tenets of journalism, including AP style.
+ Ability to manage multiple assignments at once and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
+ A demonstrated ability to engage and effectively communicate with audiences.
+ Ability to travel in and out of state and work non-standard hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends.
+ Must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain a driver’s license, or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Two years’ experience with a newsroom, corporate or non-profit communications, or creative agency team in a role focused primarily on writing and storytelling.
+ Strong understanding of editorial processes, from identifying and interviewing sources to crafting concise, compelling audience-first content.
+ Background or experience writing about biomedical sciences, veterinary medicine, or a related field.
+ Strong understanding of language, grammar, and syntax, with impeccable attention to detail.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and an affinity for learning new technology.
