    Job Description

    Traffic Control & Engineering is responsible for administration, engineering and operations related to the installation, manufacturing, maintenance and removal of signs, flexible bollards, moveable barriers, in-house traffic sign production and other traffic control devices. The office draws on the expertise and talents of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, analysts, and others to help the agency achieve Vision Zero and other city goals

     

    Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Traffic Control Inspector II to serve in the Manhattan Borough Engineering unit. Under supervision, the Traffic Control Inspector will conduct field inspections and surveys to assess traffic conditions and ensure public safety. This role involves investigating complaints related to improper parking and the absence of traffic signals and loading zones. The inspector checks traffic volumes, reports on potential issues regarding visibility, grading, and line of sight, and makes recommendations for traffic signs, signals, pavement markings, and other traffic control devices. They will also monitor the installation or removal of these devices. The inspector will study State DMV accident reports and observe accident scenes to identify causal patterns. Additionally, they will analyze the potential impact of converting two-way streets into one-way streets and prepare detailed reports, including diagrams or sketches of field conditions. Based on field assessments, the inspector prepares work orders and inspects completed work to ensure contractor compliance with established standards. The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively and inclusively, fostering professional growth and maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders.     Preferred Skills

     

    Previous experience conducting field surveys and the collection of field surveys, as well as ensuring the compliance of completed work with established standards and specifications.

    *To be considered for this position, candidate must be either serving permanently in the Traffic Control Inspector title, be reachable on Civil Service Exam Lists #3062. *

     

    Note: Less than 2 yrs. City Service - New Hire Rate: $58,022, 2 or more yrs. City service - Minimum Incumbent Rate: $66,725.

    TRAFFIC CONTROL INSPECTOR - 31715

    Qualifications

    1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization, and two years of full time satisfactory experience in vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies; or

    2. An Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or another

    closely related field; or

    3. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a satisfactory combination of experience and/or college education that is equivalent to that described in "1" or "2" above. College credits obtained from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credits for one year of full time experience. However, for every 30 semester credits that are substituted for one year of full time experience, at least 6 of the 30 semester credits must be in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or other closely related field.

    License Requirements

    Must possess a motor vehicle driver license, valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

     

    Requirements for Assignment Level II

     

    To be considered for assignment to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above: one additional year of fulltime satisfactory experience working in Assignment Level I; or one additional year of

     

    full time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above for a total of three years of experience. Such experience must include supervising the regulation of vehicular traffic or the conduct of traffic studies.

     

    Requirements for Assignment Level III

     

    To be considered for assignment to Assignment Level III candidates must have, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above: two additional years of

     

    full time satisfactory experience working in Assignment Levels I and II for a total of four years of experience; or two additional years of full time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, at least one of which must have been in supervising vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies.
