    The Director of Laboratory Services has 24 hour responsibility and accountability for the management of all laboratory practice, services and systems, human and fiscal resources, compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering interdepartmental and intradepartmental collaborative relationships.

    Essential Functions:

    1. Plan, direct and supervise the operations of all laboratory services. Maintain a current working knowledge (i.e., “bench level”) of all aspects of laboratory operations.

    2. Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory standards and all medical center policies in areas of responsibility. Ensure accreditation and licensure standards are met, including CAP, CLIA and TJC.

    3. Responsible for maintaining appropriate levels of qualified staffing and for providing for the professional development, appropriate proficiencies, and competence of staff. Responsible for hiring and performance evaluation of staff. Train and cross-train staff as appropriate to ensure effective coverage of staffing needs.

    4. Ensure safe operation of the Laboratory by strict compliance with all Safety and Infection Control standards and procedures. Ensure that the physical and environmental conditions are appropriate and adequate for the testing being performed.

    5. Ensure the ongoing planning, assessment, development, effective implementation and evaluation of programs, including interdepartmental services, based on the strategic directions of the organization, needs, data and future trends. Ensure timely services to inpatient, emergent, outpatient and ambulatory patients.

    6. Responsible for the identification and development of appropriate systems, standards, and policies in areas of responsibility. Ensure the availability of appropriate laboratory instrumentation.

    7. Develop the annual operating budget for the department. Monitor and report on performance relative to budget and provide variance analysis as needed or requested.

    8. Ensure the effectiveness of the Quality Management program which facilitates the monitoring of services rendered and provides for the identification and resolution of problems with delivery of services. Develop and implement appropriate quality tracking metrics.

    9. Responsible for the planning and/or maintenance of appropriate capital equipment in areas of responsibility. Stay current with technology and industry trends; recommend the acquisition or upgrade of technology appropriate to the organization and department. Ensure effective operations of laboratory information systems and the interfaces with other automated information systems.

    10. Identify appropriateness of in-house versus reference laboratory testing. Identify and maintain contracts with reference laboratories as appropriate.

    11. In conjunction with Finance and Patient Financial Services, achieve maximum appropriate reimbursement through compliant billing processes and effective management of charge master.

    12. Promote the philosophy, values and goals of the organization. Ensure effective communications within the department and with other departments and services.

    13. Ensure fair treatment of all Laboratory employees by maintaining objectivity and by equitable application of policy.

    14. Meet and exceed standards of performance, and ensure that staff does as well. Promote effective working relationships among staff and with the Laboratory Medical Director.

    15. Encourage team spirit and enthusiasm in the staff by demonstrating a positive attitude and an ability to work with others in cooperative effort to enhance customer satisfaction and Continuous Quality Improvement.

    Minimum Education:

    Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology.

     

    Masters in Management, Business, or Health Related Field highly desirable.

    Minimum Experience:

    Minimum of 5 years of technical bench level work in a lab

    Minimum of 3 years progressive management level experience in a hospital lab
