Summary An opportunity exists for a part-time Ophthalmologist, at the Edward Hines Jr., IL VA Medical Center, with part-time travel for coverage at the affiliated Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Joliet, IL and with Academic appointment at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL. Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) Responsibilities The Ophthalmologist performs duties of clinical, administrative and research management and will be that of the following duties: Conducts clinics several times per week and provides pre-operative and postoperative ophthalmology services for surgical patients Performs and supervises ophthalmic surgery including laser procedures in the operating room, minor surgery room, and laser room Provide non-operative Ophthalmology hospital rounds for ophthalmology patients Document services through appropriate notes, such as History and Physical, Progress notes, Operative notes and Discharge Summaries Participates in morbidity and mortality reviews and conferences Educates residents and students in the principles and therapy of complex and basic ophthalmology surgery and services Performs administrative duties involved in the proper functioning of the Ophthalmology Section, Surgery Service Line Attending required staff meetings, communicating up and down the chain of command and helping prepare heads-up and issue briefs related to adverse patient outcomes at the direction if the Section Chief Clinical Management including indirect patient care: open encounter and open consult maintenance CPRS documentation requirements and monitoring of clinic management Maintains involvement in matters concerning clinic productivity, relevant performance measures, Quality and Patient Safety oversight, as well as process improvements (system redesigns). If involved in research, they will show an ability to identify and define significant Research and Development problems, to plan and execute a precise research program, and to generate effective reports and results worthy of publication. Performs other related duties as required Work Schedule: Part-time M-F, will include Saturdays, evenings, and possible call coverage; Negotiable days within clinic/service needs Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination Requirement for Title 38 Health Care Personnel The position to which you are applying for employment is considered a Title 38 Health Care Personnel position within the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA). All new VHA Title 38 Health Care Personnel are required to participate in the Agency's COVID-19 vaccination program. The major requirement of this program consists of employees receiving either a complete COVID-19 vaccine series or receiving a medical or religious vaccination exemption. New employees must provide proper documentation of vaccination, initiate a COVID-19 vaccination series, or complete an exemption request within two (2) weeks of beginning employment with the DVA. Preferred Experience: 5 years specialized experience Board Certified Post-doctoral Cornea Research Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
