Program Director – Advanced Rural Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship
As the Program Director of the Advanced Rural Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship, you will collaborate closely with the University of Minnesota, CentraCare, and other stakeholders to lead the development and oversight of a new, non-ACGME accredited training program based within CentraCare’s diverse learning environments, with a strong emphasis on rural practice. You will guide all aspects of the clinical and educational experience, ensuring alignment with the Board of Certification in Family Medicine Obstetrics (BCFMO) training standards.
Responsibilities include leading fellow recruitment, learning faculty recruitment and retention, as well as overseeing fellow education and evaluation. This role offers the unique opportunity to build a program that fosters collaboration among family medicine, OB/GYN, and psychiatry residency training, creating an integrated environment that addresses the full spectrum of rural maternal health, including perinatal mental health and surgical obstetrics.
You will champion patient safety, evidence-based practice, and patient-centered care. Patients of all ethnicities and orientations are served.
Core Functions
+ In partnership with CentraCare and University GME leadership, ensure compliance with BCFMO training requirements and CentraCare institutional policies.
+ In collaboration with CentraCare family medicine, OB/GYN, and psychiatry clinical sections, identify and integrate training opportunities that address the needs of rural maternity care delivery.
+ Assist in strategic and operational planning for the fellowship, including annual program review and improvement planning.
+ Support fiscal accountability for the University of Minnesota/CentraCare Advanced Rural Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship.
+ Serve as the primary liaison between CentraCare GME leadership and the FM-OB Fellowship team.
+ Support University GME office with any needed data and committee involvement.
+ Comply with UMN OGME reporting requirements (including but not limited to completing the Annual Institutional Review survey, ensuring faculty and fellows complete the Annual Program Evaluation).
+ Submit accurate and complete information required and requested by the Designated Institutional Official.
+ Attend and serve when appropriate as nonvoting member (unless elected as voting member) to Graduate Medical Education Committee of the University of Minnesota.
+ Evaluate the fellowship program annually and develop improvement plans based on outcomes, stakeholder input, and evolving rural health needs.
Curriculum
+ Lead curriculum development, implementation, and ongoing revision to meet fellowship learning objectives.
Teaching
+ Contribute to the education of fellows and other learners through lectures, workshops, simulation and/or other didactic activities.
+ Contribute to clinical services and participate in precepting activities for fellows and other learners.
Recruitment
+ Lead the recruitment and selection of fellows for advanced family medicine obstetrics training.
Assessment
+ Manage fellow evaluation processes to ensure clinical competency, professionalism, and readiness for graduation.
Fellow Support
+ Lead fair and consistent disciplinary procedures in alignment with CentraCare GME policies.
+ Provide a learning and working environment in which trainees have the opportunity to raise concerns and provide feedback in a confidential manner as appropriate, without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
Faculty Development
+ Support recruitment, onboarding, professional development, and evaluation of fellowship faculty to foster program growth and sustainability.
Professional Development
+ Develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge of BCFMO program requirements.
+ Attend at least one locally or nationally offered professional development opportunity annually, including but not limited to:
+ AAFP Family-Centered Pregnancy Care
+ Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Conference
+ Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology & Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics
+ Rural Medicine Training Collaborative (RMTC) Annual Meeting
+ Address systemic biases in education and healthcare delivery.
+ Foster community relationships, maintaining educational liaison relationships with the medical staff, community agencies, and teaching sites.
+ Perform other duties as assigned by CentraCare GME leadership.
Support for the Role Will Include
+ CentraCare Core Faculty in FM-OB.
+ Supervision from CentraCare GME leadership.
+ Program coordinator at CentraCare with dedicated FTE to this track.
+ Education Coordinator, Scheduler, Program Assistants.
Measurement of Program Success Will Include
+ Launch of the fellowship.
+ Recruitment of diverse and capable trainees.
+ Results of trainee and faculty surveys.
+ Graduation rate and placement within scope of training for fellows.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathy, or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Degree – Upon hire.
Experience
Minimum of 3 years of full-time professional activity in Family Medicine Obstetrics with full spectrum (C-section) care delivery, or 3 years of full-time professional activity in Obstetrics/Gynecology.
Preferred fellowship training in Faculty Development.
Licenses and Certifications
Board certification by the American Board of Family Medicine or by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, paired with certification by the Board of Family Medicine Obstetrics – Required upon hire, or
Board certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology – Required upon hire.
Eligible for licensure in Minnesota – Required upon hire.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support in Obstetrics – Required upon hire or within first 6 months.
Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification – Required upon hire or within first 6 months.
Driver License
A valid Minnesota Class D driver’s license – Required.
Additional Qualifications
Required to be an active member of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology – Upon hire or within first 6 months.
Required to be eligible for an appointment in good standing to the Medical Staff of St. Cloud Hospital and/or Rice Memorial Hospital – Upon hire.
Demonstrated rural health practice knowledge-base and commitment – Upon hire.
