Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Maintains 24 hour-a-day accountability for all patient care and nursing activities on assigned outpatient unit. Oversees and directs unit activities including standards development, human resource management, assessment of resource needs and utilization, staff development and communication within nursing practice as well as among other disciplines and departments. Oversees all performance improvement activities at the unit level and participates in committees at all levels within the institution.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ Fosters employee engagement. Involves staff in the development of action plans addressing areas for growth.
+ Develops capable and committed staff through recruitment and retention efforts. Actively monitors BSN, certification, and vacancy rates within unit/department/service.
+ Monitors, encourages, and promotes staff development and retention through CAS advancement, higher education, certification achievement, staff engagement, recognition and mentoring.
+ Promotes diversity and inclusion within unit/department/service.
+ Supports effective interdisciplinary team building and communication through staff meetings, retreats, varied communication approaches and shared governance.
+ Manages staff performance by articulating mission and vision, setting expectations, and providing feedback in a concise, timely manner.
+ Establishes and promotes care delivery standards necessary to achieve positive staff/patient quality and safety outcomes.
+ Promotes and maintains high standards for safe patient handling, appropriate use of PPE, patient hand-off, universal precautions and hand washing.
+ Establishes and maintains unit-based quality initiatives through the monitoring of performance improvement and nursing quality outcome indicators.
+ Works with leadership team, unit champions, and staff to foster a culture of safety and an environment receptive to change and improvement.
+ Maintains high care delivery standards through evidence-based best practice, value analysis, and research.
+ Regularly participates in inter-professional rounds.
+ Monitors the need for quality and safety improvements through use of the events reporting system.
+ Develops and implements action plans to address identified concerns.
+ Ensures thorough and accurate documentation of patient care delivery.
+ Promotes patient and family participation in CGCAHPS and/or HCAHPS and internal surveys.
+ Uses qualitative and quantitative data to develop and implement action plans to improve enhanced care coordination (reduce LOS, wait times, and non-productive time for patients), access to care, interactions with staff and nurses, and overall satisfaction scores.
+ Actively seeks and responds to feedback.
+ Ensures all staff members have the resources necessary to respond to patient and family needs effectively and efficiently.
+ Acts intentionally in providing service recovery.
+ Demonstrates, encourages, and fosters a unit culture that supports diversity and inclusion among all patients, families, and staff.
+ Ensures fiscal accountability and works effectively within budget allocations.
+ Optimizes revenue through efficient management of patient volumes, program expansion, maximizing billing opportunities, obtaining prior authorization and action planning to address variances.
+ Reduces waste and allocates resources by meeting quality metrics, identifying and maintaining efficient workflow, minimizing overtime, managing supplies and medications, and implementing Lean Processes into structure and processes.
+ Promotes and supports unit staff involvement and outreach in the community.
+ Supports and participates in the development of product and service lines.
+ Works to improve communication and standardize processes across service lines and network.
+ Encourages in-network referrals.
+ Promotes and supports UR Medicine to be the local health system of choice and upstate premier health network.
+ Promotes and supports increasing the number of lives covered within the network, building specialty networks, and enhancing clinical services to expand hospital system capacity.
+ Encourages and participates in health system collaborations to enhance the healthcare capabilities of local communities.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
+ Bachelor's degree in Nursing and 1 year of experience in a nursing leadership role required
+ Master's degree in Nursing or related field preferred
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
+ Successful completion of orientation at the unit level required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
+ RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure upon hire required and
+ Certification in Nursing specialty area upon hire preferred
