    Job Summary

    The Eisenberg Family Depression Center at the University of Michigan is seeking a Senior Finance Lead (Financial or Bus Analyst Lead) to provide expert strategic financial leadership for a dynamic and growing center. Our mission is to improve lives and empower communities through bold innovations and interdisciplinary collaborations across research and outreach that advance how we understand, treat and prevent depressive illnesses. As we expand, we require a Senior Finance Leadwho will operate with a high level of independence, anticipating the center's financial needs, proactively identifying issues and trends, and shaping a resilient and sustainable fiscal future.

     

    The successful candidate will serve as the center's primary financial strategist, reporting directly to and partnering with the Managing Director while monitoring, analyzing, and communicating center financial performance. We are looking for someone with a demonstrated ability to anticipate, communicate, and manage fiscal risks and opportunities with minimal oversight. Strong organizational and technical skills, the ability to prioritize and exercise good judgment, and a consistent track record of meeting deadlines are essential. This role is pivotal in surfacing critical issues and opportunities, leading advanced scenario modeling, and recommending actionable solutions to drive data-informed decision making across all center operations. The Senior Finance Lead will ensure leadership is well informed, can act quickly on emerging issues, and is equipped with the best available financial intelligence for short- and long-term planning. As such, the ideal candidate will be able to translate complex financial data for a non-technical audience. The Senior Finance Lead will also serve as a key liaison, collaborating and communicating effectively with Medical School and other university units to ensure seamless financial operations. By providing the financial insight and leadership that will help guide our growth, the Senior Finance Lead will play a vital role in supporting our team's collaborative culture and advancing the Center's mission.

    Responsibilities*

    Strategic Financial Leadership

    + Independently oversee center-wide financial operations, including annual and multi-year budget development for complex funding portfolios (e.g. gifts, endowments, core funds, sponsored funds, and other revenue streams)

    + Develop and maintain robust forecasting and scenario analyses for center sustainability; model various revenue and expense projections to inform resource allocation and strategic investments

    + Establish and monitor key financial performance indicators, proactively alerting the Managing Director and center leadership to variances, emerging risks, or opportunities

    + Make recommendations for operational or strategic adjustments in response to financial trends and drive the implementation of approved changes

    Financial Operations & Analysis

    + Oversee monthly maintenance and management of the center's financial portfolio including reconciliation of all accounts and project grants using various accounting and information systems, tracking incoming and outgoing center financial commitments, preparing journal entries, close out of accounts, and determining the correct project grants for salary support for faculty and staff

    + Execute and coordinate complex analyses on a variety of projects, including but not limited to new initiatives, program expansions, cost-benefit analyses, and investment proposals

    + Collaborate closely with a variety of campus stakeholders and administrative partners, including Procurement, Shared Services, Development, and relevant academic units, to coordinate financial processes, ensure effective communication, and problem solve

    Proactive Financial Monitoring and Reporting

    + Regularly analyze and report on financial health; identify patterns, outliers, and potential fiscal challenges well before they impact center operations

    + Design, coordinate, and independently execute monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reviews for center leadership

    + Prepare and present clear, actionable reports and dashboards for executive audiences - distilling complex data into strategic insights

    Compliance & Process Improvement

    + Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university, gift, and sponsor financial policies

    + Complete annual review of financial internal controls and develop solutions to close any gaps

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, or a related discipline

    + Financial or Business Analyst Lead: Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, ideally in a large, diverse, and complex organization

    + Financial or Business Analyst Senior (Underfill): 5-8 years of progressively responsible financial, accounting, or business analysis experience, ideally in a large, diverse, and complex organization

    + Specific experience developing and leading financial strategy, including forecasting, long-term fiscal planning, and scenario modeling and analysis

    + Demonstrated success in high-level budget development, management, and reporting

    + Demonstrated excellence working with complex spreadsheets

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Master's degree (e.g., MBA, MAcc, MPA, MPH)

    + Experience in academic, research, or healthcare finance

    + Advanced knowledge of relevant financial systems (e.g., business intelligence/reporting tools like M-Reports, M-Pathways, Business Objects, and budget tools)

    + Demonstrated knowledge of university or sponsored project financial policies and procedures

    + Experience presenting financial information to executive audiences

    + Experience leading or mentoring financial staff

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
