FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The English Department at Bronx Community College invites applications for a Lecturer position in English with a specialty in Teaching English as Second Language (TESOL). The successful candidate will be expected to teach a wide range of ESL courses with a focus on academic writing and, possibly, credit bearing composition courses geared to native English speakers. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong background in TESOL, basic writing, and writing studies with a record of success in teaching academic literacy to linguistically diverse students.
The position is primarily in person, though candidates should be versed in teaching in multiple modalities. The preferred qualifications of the successful candidate will have a masters degree or a PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Language and Literacy, English, Composition Studies, Basic Writing, or related fields.
The successful candidate should also be enthusiastic about the mission of an equity-oriented community college in the Bronx and prepared to teach and mentor diverse populations of students as well as to participate actively in departmental and College committee work and other service duties. Administrative experience is preferred. The successful candidate should be prepared to serve as ESL Coordinator. In this role, they advise the English Chairperson on all ESL matters and are responsible for scheduling ESL courses and program meetings, reviewing student placements, hiring and training ESL adjunct faculty, coordinating placement exams, supporting students and faculty with ESL-related issues, and representing the ESL program at campus and CUNY-wide events.
The position of Lecturer is tenure-bearing through what is called a “certificate of continuous employment” (CCE) after the sixth annual reappointment. Lecturer is a teaching position with a course load of twenty-four hours per year in addition to major expectations of departmental service. While there is no expectation of research or publication, our department welcomes applications from candidates with scholarly interests, especially in fields that are relevant for student success, such as language pedagogy, translanguaging, academic literacy, writing studies and retention theory.
