    Assistant Professor- Modern Languages and Comparative Literature- Sephardic Studies

    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    The Department of Modern Language and Comparative Literature at Baruch College of the City University of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Sephardic Studies, to begin in Fall 2026.

     

    We seek a scholar whose research and teaching engage the history, cultures, languages, and/ or literatures of Sephardic Jews in Latin America. We welcome applicants whose work is grounded in innovative methodologies and engages with transnational, diasporic, or comparative frameworks.

     

    Candidates should have a strong research agenda, demonstrated potential for scholarly excellence, and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to our core curriculum and be able to teach courses in Comparative Literature and Jewish Studies program. Affiliation with the Wasserman Jewish Studies Center is expected.

    Responsibilities:

    + Maintain an active research agenda and publish in areas of expertise.

    + Teach a standard load of undergraduate and graduate courses (18 units per year) except when reassigned time is made available by contract or funding external to the department.

    + Advise and mentor students at all levels.

    + Participate in curriculum development and departmental service.

    + Contribute to the intellectual life of the department and university through lectures, workshops, and collaborative research.

    + Contribute to the mission of the Wasserman Jewish Studies Center.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required Qualifications:

    + Ph.D. in the appropriate field by the time of appointment in August 2026.

    + Demonstrated potential for high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship in Sephardic and/or Latin American studies.

    + Evidence of, or potential for, effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels

    + Commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Proficiency in relevant languages (e.g., Ladino, Hebrew, Spanish, Portuguese)

    + Administrative experience in a Jewish Studies Center

    + Scholarship in Holocaust and/or Antisemitism Studies

    COMPENSATION

    $86,741- $102,017; commensurate with qualifications and experience
