Job Summary:
Key Responsibilities:
+ Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
+ Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
+ Independently perform experiments and tabulate, and analyze research
+ Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results
+ Independently perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test process and evaluate the results produced
+ Independently prepare the lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
+ Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary
+ Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed
+ Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well-established guidelines and instructions
+ Review, complete, and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
+ Independently research issues and develop recommendations to resolve process issues
+ Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operational, and management needs
+ Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required
+ Assist and train junior team members
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
+ Maintain laboratory compliance with environmental health and safety regulations
+ Order reagents and materials and oversee inventory
+ Maintain zebrafish colony, including husbandry and genotyping
+ Perform standard molecular/biochemical assays, including PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, and western blots
+ Perform in situ RNA hybridization and immunohistochemistry
+ Perform microscopic analyses and basic imaging
+ Use computational tools to analyze data sets
+ Carry out zebrafish behavioral assays

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a degree in biology, genetics, biochemistry, neuroscience, or a related field
+ One (1) year of professional experience as a research technician, laboratory assistant, or equivalent, in a wet lab setting.
Condition of Employment:
+ Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
+ _Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check_

_Preferred Qualifications:_
+ _Two (2) or more years of professional experience as a research technician, laboratory assistant, or equivalent, in a wet lab setting_
+ _Prior experience with common coding languages_
+ _Previous experience with bioinformatics/statistics using R, Python, or related programming language, to develop pipelines for analysis of biological data_
+ _Previous experience collecting and analyzing image data from confocal microscopy_
+ _Prior experience with vertebrate animal research_
+ _Previous lab experience with zebrafish as a model organism_
_Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:_
+ _Proficient knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, including safety procedures_
+ _Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally_
+ _Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution_
+ _Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information_

A position as an Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional is available within the Sagerstrom research laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Developmental Biology, at the University of Colorado Denver-Anschutz Medical Campus. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position that will utilize molecular, biochemical, genetic, imaging, and bioinformatic/computational approaches in a wet-lab setting. The Sagerstrom lab studies the formation of neurons in the developing nervous system. As a Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional in our lab, you will work closely with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to support their projects. The work is highly flexible and variable and includes standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, subcloning, gel electrophoresis), microscopy (fluorescence and confocal microscopy), basic computational/bioinformatic, and animal behavioral analyses. Commensurate with increased expertise, you will be given the opportunity to work more independently on projects using state-of-the-art methods such as scRNAseq and scMultiome analyses.

The Sagerstrom research group is part of a highly cohesive academic unit in the Section of Developmental Biology within the Department of Pediatrics. The Section of Developmental Biology is committed to research that improves child health with five main objectives: To accomplish these objectives, the faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff who comprise the Section of Developmental Biology perform research using stem cells, organoids, and animal experimental models, including Drosophila, zebrafish, and mice. Our investigations focus on several major tissue and organ systems, including the brain, heart, intestines, face, vascular, olfactory, and immune systems. Our work is leading to a better understanding of childhood disabilities associated with neuropsychiatric disease, Down syndrome, the congenital basis of cardiovascular and facial malformations, and the impact of maternal health on fetal development.
