Responsibilities Major Duties include: For the GS-04: Conduct field implementation of non-native invasive plant field program; including survey, monitoring and treatment using chemical, biological, mechanical and/or cultural control methods. This work will be lead and monitored by higher graded employees. Participate in hazard tree management activities including conducting hazard tree surveys and mitigation action which may include cutting trees and debris removal as directed by higher graded employees. Assist in fence construction and repair for livestock trespass. For the GS-05: Assist in field implementation of non-native invasive plant field program; including survey, monitoring and treatment using chemical, biological, mechanical and/or cultural control methods. Lead hazard tree management activities including conducting hazard tree surveys and mitigation action which may include cutting trees and debris removal. Lead fence construction and repair for livestock trespass. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Depending on location, occupancy of government quarters may be required. Depending on location, government housing may be available. You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. If selected for a position/location that requires search and rescue, emergency response, use of firearms, or watercraft operation, you will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/26/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. OR four seasons of specialized experience. General experience is experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience must have been directly related to the work of the position for which application is made. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Forestry aid or technician work, engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involves the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non- forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment, farming or ranching work that involves application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provides a basic understanding of land use, and forest or range fire control, prevention or suppression work. Qualifying experience may also include previous work on an invasive plant/hazard tree crew. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of two years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. For example: 6 months of general experience, 3 months of specialized experience and 1 year of education that included 6 related semester hours. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level, acquired either in the federal or private sector that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position; i.e., experience working with invasive plant eradication through the application of herbicides, using chainsaws, hazard tree identification and removal, etc. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject- matter field directly related to these positions or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses as listed in 1B above. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. Physical Demands: Lifting moderately heavy items, bending, stooping for long periods, and strenuous use of hand tools on uneven terrain will be required. Foot travel may be off trail through dense brush, forest or rocky slopes. Some projects may involve hiking or backpacking long distances and over-night camping in primitive conditions. Driving vehicles on mountainous roads in harsh weather conditions will likely be encountered. Extreme physical demands may occur from emergency assignments for fire and rescue. Incumbent will be required to wear protective clothing when spraying herbicides for weed control. Incumbent must wear safety equipment when cutting hazard trees and working with chainsaws. Work Environment: Work is performed in harsh and varied weather conditions out of doors, at varied elevations. Periods of freezing rain, snow, wind and fog are common. Assignments will require travel in terrain frequented by grizzly bears and other potentially dangerous wildlife. Incumbent will work with chemical herbicides to control exotic plants, and the use of chainsaws to fell and cut-up hazard trees. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. Some positions may be able to telework.
