Position Summary
The School of Music, Theatre and Dance at Colorado State University is seeking applicants for a Costume Technician. The Technician position provides practical training and supervision for the CSU Music, Theatre and Dance Practicum students. Hours are flexible, some evenings and weekends required during rehearsal and production runs.
Supervision and Mentoring, Percentage Of Time 20%
•Supervises and mentors work study students with sewing, crafting and production techniques
•Has a passion for teaching and mentoring students in a hands-on learning environment
Training in Costume Construction, Percentage Of Time 80%
•Builds custom costume and crafts projects using sketches provided by student and staff costume designers for the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance
•Cuts and stitches custom garments with the aid of student first hands and stitchers
•Has Machine and handstitching skills, as well as basic patternmaking and draping techniques
•Alters costumes
•Fabricates items using flat patterning, draping, and other means as necessary for the project
•Maintains a clean and organized costume shop, stock and craftsroom, including but not limited to dye, distressing tools, wig stock, makeup stock, costume stock, laundry and wardrobe supplies
•Completes and assigns tasks on the to-do rack as needed
•Utilizes economical and time efficient options, products and techniques for costume projects and crafts
•Attends rehearsals, dress rehearsals and production meetings as deemed necessary by Costume Shop Manger (occasionally in the evenings)
•Maintains proper safety techniques
Position Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Dance, Theatre, Costume Design/Technology, or a related degree; with demonstrated knowledge of stitching and crafts is required OR Commensurate Experience.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with domestic and/or industrial sewing machines including overlock.
Preferred Qualifications
2 years of experience in a professional or educational theatrical setting.
Professional and/or educational theatrical experience in and of the following preferred: leatherwork, millinery, dying, distressing, painting, fabric modification, sculpture, foam work, metalwork, jewelry making, mask making, puppetry, etc.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in hair and makeup design and application techniques.
