    The School of Medicine's** **_Division of Neurological Surger_** **y has an outstanding opportunity open for a** **_Temporary_** **Research Technologist 1.

    BASIC FUNCTION

    Perform technical procedures and operate analytical instruments to support scientific research. Assist in various investigative processes in a laboratory setting.

    THE HOFSTETTER LAB

    Founded by Christoph Hofstetter, M.D.,Ph.D, the Hofstetter Lab research focuses on the development on biomarkers for prognosis and treatment guidance following acute spinal cord injury. The laboratory has developed a novel type of contrast-enhanced ultrasound which allows to visualize specific segments of the vascular tree. This innovative imaging modality allows his laboratory to assess the impact of trauma on local tissue perfusion. The lab also investigates spinal stimulation for chronic spinal cord injury and the use of stem cells and specialized polymers to improve recovery following acute spinal cord injury.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    This is the entry-level position in the Research Technologist series. Under general supervision, the technologist will follow established research protocols, operate analytical instruments, collect and verify research data, and assist with basic calculations and data presentation, such as preparing charts and summaries.

    TYPICAL DUTIES

    + Prepare laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment.

    + Order chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies.

    + Assist with tissue processing, including cardiac perfusions, frozen tissue sectioning, slide preparation, and immunohistochemistry.

    + Perform technical procedures such as electrophoresis, chromatography, and assays.

    + Assist with animal surgeries and post-operative care (occasionally on weekends and holidays).

    + Maintain and oversee tissue cultures.

    + Operate laboratory instruments such as spectrometers, liquid chromatographs, centrifuges, fluorometers, glucose analyzers, incubators, ultrasound or x-ray equipment, electroencephalographs (EEG), electrocardiographs (ECG), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) devices, and light, polarizing, and electron microscopes.

    + Collect and accurately record research data, organize and perform calculations, and prepare data reports with charts and graphs.

    + Perform behavioral testing and training on animals, such as rats, and maintain detailed records of scores and results in graphical form.

    + Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.

    + Service and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.

    + Demonstrate and explain laboratory techniques to personnel, students, and others as needed.

    + May oversee the work of laboratory technicians, students, and other personnel.

    + Perform additional related duties as required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    + Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of science or technical field (e.g., biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology).

    + Familiarity with specialized coursework related to laboratory procedures, instrumentation, or specific scientific fields.

    + Experience operating laboratory instruments such as spectrometers, centrifuges, liquid chromatographs, microscopes (light, polarizing, electron), and NMR devices.

    + Proficiency in performing technical procedures like electrophoresis, chromatography, immunohistochemistry, and assays.

    + Knowledge in tissue processing techniques, including cardiac perfusions, frozen tissue sectioning, and slide preparation.

    + Ability to assist in animal surgeries and behavioral testing with detailed record-keeping.

    + Skilled in collecting, recording, and verifying research data with a high degree of accuracy.

    + Competency in organizing and performing basic calculations, generating reports, and presenting data through charts, graphs, and summaries.

    + Familiarity with data analysis software or tools to assist in interpreting and visualizing results.

    + Understanding of scientific research protocols and investigative processes in a laboratory setting.

    + Experience with the preparation of laboratory reagents, chemicals, and proper maintenance of equipment.

    + Ability to assist in ordering laboratory supplies and reagents while maintaining laboratory inventory.

    + Experience with handling, training, and testing small animals (e.g., rats) in laboratory experiments.

    + Familiarity with animal behavior testing procedures and the ability to maintain detailed and graphical records of results.

    + Ability to service and maintain laboratory instruments and troubleshoot technical issues.

    + Capable of performing routine instrument calibrations and preventative maintenance.

    + Strong communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate and explain laboratory techniques to students, technicians, and other personnel.

    + Participation in laboratory meetings and planning sessions, contributing ideas and solutions.

    + Ability to work collaboratively within a team and under general supervision, with occasional oversight responsibilities for technicians and students.

    + Strong attention to detail in laboratory procedures, safety protocols, data collection, and reporting.

    + Ability to follow established protocols precisely to ensure reproducible results.

    + Ability to effectively manage time and laboratory resources to meet project deadlines.

    + Experience with maintaining laboratory records, including experiment logs, equipment usage, and reagent inventories.

    + Willingness to stay updated on new laboratory techniques, emerging technologies, and scientific trends relevant to the position.

    + Flexibility to adapt to the needs of the laboratory and tackle diverse tasks as required.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $21.28 hourly

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $25.05 hourly
