    Job Summary

    As an Undergraduate Academic Advisor in the Department of Statistics, your role is central to providing high-quality and impactful services that seek to continuously improve the student experience. You will serve as one of two undergraduate program advisors for Statistics. Responsibilities include providing a broad range of academic advising, administrative, and programmatic assistance to undergraduate students, the Director of the Undergraduate Program (DUS), faculty, and staff. The advisor is the initial point of contact for undergraduate students and acts as a liaison to Newnan Advising and the College of LSA.

     

    About UM Statistics - TheDepartment of Statistics (https://lsa.umich.edu/stats) at the University of Michigan is a growing department with two majors, two minors, three master's programs, and a Ph.D. program.

    Responsibilities*

    Academic Advising:

    + Hold in-person and virtual one-on-one advising appointments and open advising for undergraduate students, including undergraduate AMDP students

    + Contribute to the development of academic enrichment and research learning experiences for students at all phases of their academic careers

    + Provide students and faculty with information regarding policies, procedures, resources, and opportunities

    + Provide appropriate student referrals to other campus units if assistance is needed beyond departmental advising

    Student Administrative Support:

    + Coordinate override process for undergraduate courses

    + Assist with the administration of the undergraduate research program, honors program, and annual student awards

    + Provide administrative support to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, including outreach, analyzing data, creating surveys, and preparing ad hoc reports.

    + Act as a liaison to faculty advisors and the program coordinator for Applied Statistics AMDP

    + Develop, create, and maintain a robust website presence to ensure accurate and engaging content for students, faculty, and the broader community

    + Plan and coordinate student-focused events

    + Assist in overseeing the Peer Advisor mentorship program, including recruitment, training, and program assessment

    + Serve as the Departmental liaison to student organizations, offering oversight and support to ensure the organization's activities align with departmental and university policies

    Departmental Administrative Support and Professional Development:

    + Provide responsive and timely academic support service to faculty, staff, and prospective students

    + Serve on departmental committees

    + Assist in ensuring a welcoming, positive, and professional environment

    + Participate in professional development activities to increase knowledge base, enhance skills, and continuously develop best practices

    Required Qualifications*

    + Associate's degree or equivalent education and experience

    + At least four years of experience with academic student services or related administrative services

    + Verbal and written communication skills to support a positive, welcoming, and professional environment

    + Strategies to adapt to changing priorities and maintain a consistent work product

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree or equivalent education & experience

    + At least six years of experience providing advising or administrative support to students, preferably at the college or university level

    + Experience within a higher education setting that places a high value on student success, quality service, team orientation, intentional planning, and innovation
