    Job Description

    The Engineering Systems Administrator is a high-level technical specialist responsible for managing and supporting servers, data centers, and associated network and infrastructure components. This role operates with a high degree of independence, participating in budget development and task planning activities. The position may also involve taking direction from project managers or IT management, with secondary duties assigned as needed.

    Responsibilities

    + Perform routine maintenance and operational support activities for networks and servers, including monitoring performance and security, maintaining software patch levels, and troubleshooting system outages.

    + Ensure optimal server and network performance by monitoring the overall health of servers, network components, and data centers, and recommend improvements, modifications, and upgrades.

    + Ensure all support requests are entered into the Help Desk tracking system in accordance with engineering procedures, and refer problems to other technical support groups when necessary.

    + Install, upgrade, maintain, and modify server software, including operating systems, web servers, application servers, directory services, and other server-based applications.

    + Assist Support Specialists in resolving support requests involving server and network components, and occasionally perform desktop support functions.

    + Collaborate with IT management and the user community to establish and maintain appropriate server and network computing environments.

    + Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards to support network and server hardware and software.

    + Perform analysis of system, server, network, and application usage, and develop plans for growth and increased capacity.

    + Provide occasional IT support for business-operated network systems owned by other organizations.

    + Support and assist in maintaining or achieving cyber security certifications such as NIST, NRC, COMSEC, and DOE compliance requirements.

    Essential Skills

    + Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences, Business Management, Engineering, or a technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

    + Seven years of network experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Knowledge of multiple common network servers, operating systems, hardware platforms, standards, and protocols used in infrastructure architecture.

     

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

     

    + Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a DOE 'Q' level security clearance.

    Work Environment

    The work environment includes managing and supporting servers and data centers with a focus on performance and security. The role involves operating independently with minimal supervision, collaborating with IT management, and occasionally performing desktop support functions. The position requires compliance with cyber security certifications and may include working with various technical support groups to resolve issues.
