Job Description:
The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Virology at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will also assume a leadership role within the Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute ( ITDI ), contributing to its strategic mission of advancing research, education, and community impact in infectious diseases.
Position Overview
We seek an accomplished virologist with a strong record of independent research, extramural funding, and mentorship. The candidate’s expertise should complement existing strengths in microbial pathogenesis and/or infectious disease biology, and their leadership will be instrumental in guiding ITDI’s continued growth and national visibility.
Responsibilities
+ Provide scientific and strategic leadership within the Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute ( ITDI ) (https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/itdi) .
+ Maintain an active, externally funded research program in virology.
+ Teach virology and related topics to medical students.
+ Mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and junior faculty.
+ Contribute to institutional service and interdisciplinary collaborations across Biomedical Sciences Department (https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/about/departments/biomedical) , ITDI and HCOM .
Research Environment
The successful candidate will join a collaborative and expanding community of infectious disease researchers, with modern laboratory space in proximity to other Biosafety Level II microbial pathogenesis labs. HCOM’s Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute provides a dynamic platform for translational research, global health partnerships, and interdisciplinary training initiatives that bridge medicine, public health, and molecular science.
Appointment and Resources
+ 11-month, tenure-track appointment in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine
+ Final workload distribution is negotiable but will approximate 60% Research, 20% Teaching, and 20% Service.
+ Preferred start date: July 1, 2026
+ Competitive start-up package and access to shared core facilities. Institutional support will be provided jointly by the Office of Research and Grants ( ORG ), ITDI , Vice President for Research ( VPR ), and the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Laboratory space is available on the Athens campus, with potential for expansion in the new biomedical research building (https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/research/facilities/translational) slated to open in 2026.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D., D.V.M, M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree in virology, microbiology or a closely related field
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Demonstrated record of sustained, competitive external funding
+ Evidence of effective leadership and mentorship in academic or research settings
+ Commitment to excellence in teaching and service
+ Research focused on virus-host interactions, emerging viral diseases, or microbial pathogenesis
+ Experience building interdisciplinary or cross-institutional research programs
