Western New York Maritime Charter School is seeking a focused, highly skilled professional to serve in a hybrid role that supports our Middle School cadets academically, socially, and behaviorally. Position Overview
This hybrid role provides guidance counseling, social work support, behavioral intervention, and conflict resolution for middle school cadets. The ideal candidate has strong clinical skills, excellent judgment, and the ability to build trust while holding students to clear expectations.
This role reports to the Vice Commandant and works closely with Student Support, the Guidance Department, and classroom teachers.
Key ResponsibilitiesGuidance Counseling
+ Provide academic, social emotional, and short term crisis counseling for middle school cadets.
+ Support goal setting, progress monitoring, academic planning, and transition services.
+ Conduct small group sessions focused on self management, organization, leadership, coping strategies, and social skills.
+ Track and document all counseling contacts with precision.
Social Work Support
+ Conduct needs assessments for cadets requiring deeper social-emotional or family-related supports.
+ Provide short term and targeted therapeutic interventions within a school-based context.
+ Make referrals to appropriate community agencies when needed and maintain communication with external service providers.
+ Collaborate with families to address attendance, trauma related needs, home stressors, and environmental barriers to student success.
Behavioral Intervention
+ Implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral supports that align with our Code of Conduct and NJROTC-based structure.
+ Conduct student conferences that reinforce accountability, self discipline, and restorative practices when appropriate.
+ Analyze behavioral trends and collaborate with staff to develop practical and consistent behavior plans.
+ Maintain clear data and documentation for all interventions.
Conflict Resolution
+ Respond quickly and objectively to student conflicts, ensuring calm and fair resolution.
+ Facilitate structured mediation sessions.
+ Communicate clearly with families regarding incidents, next steps, and expectations.
+ Partner with Student Support to enforce consequences and follow through.
Qualifications
+ Master's degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or related field required.
+ NYS certification in School Counseling or an MSW/LMHC with school-based experience strongly preferred.
+ Demonstrated experience providing social work services to adolescents.
+ Ability to stay calm under pressure, communicate clearly, and manage competing priorities.
+ Strong rapport with middle school students paired with firm boundaries.
+ High standards for professionalism, documentation, confidentiality, and follow through.
+ Experience in high needs, urban, or military structured environments is a strong plus.
