Definition
Position Summary:
The Director of Communications is responsible for providing strategic guidance and oversight on media relations, marketing, multi-media communications; creating and administering City Council communication plan to promote goals and initiatives; managing the communications and coordination of outreach efforts among City Council’s elected members.
Essential Functions:
Provides leadership and strategic direction for implementing priorities, goals and objectives to ensure City Council communications are current, accurate, effective and timely; Ensures appropriate dissemination of information from City Council to cultivate public relations and community engagement; Provides oversight of all media communications through various print, internet and social media sources; Manages the design and production of all City Council publications personally or in conjunction with existing or designated vendors.
Plans, organizes and coordinates project activities to include the development and execution of a comprehensive Communications Plan by coordinating with Council Member Offices, leadership and staff; Responsible for press events; prepares speeches, talking points, correspondence, acknowledgements and oral presentations to be delivered by elected officials, internal and external stakeholders; Proactively and strategically promotes City Council and elected officials.
Establishes, implements and evaluates internal systems to effectively meet operating goals and objectives; Develops and evaluates policies and procedures to effectively carry out City Council operations; Promotes staff collaboration, innovation and critical thinking in developing solutions and approaches to issues; Responsible for effective employee relations, diversity and staff development.

Education and Experience:
1. Bachelor’s degree in related field
2. Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plan
3. Experience working with members of the media to communicate with the public on behalf of an organization
4. Strong knowledge of social media content marketing
5. Experience with graphic design; creating visual content
6. Previous supervisory experience
7. Experience in community engagement; community outreach; strong knowledge of community
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time unclassified position. Some evening and weekend work is required as job duties demand.

Those individuals receiving unclassified appointments serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority and may be terminated from employment at any time. Under general direction, is responsible for directing and coordinating activities relating to policy, initiatives, and other matters requiring legislative attention or action; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work

Represents Council as directed at various meetings and discussions involving City officials, business and community leaders, the public, and others;
Creates and executes long and short term strategic plans promoting the purpose and priorities for City Council which may include considerations to sustainability of programs, activities and partnerships, and community engagement opportunities;
Participates in the development and formulation of policies for City council that directly impact and/or address the needs of the community;
Stewards and builds cross-sector, diverse and new relationships to benefit citizens of Columbus;
Reviews, recommends changes, and approves release of official communications from City Council;
Develops and coordinates projects on behalf of Council;
Prepares reports to Council in order to keep them informed as to the status of projects;
Serves as liaison between other City departments, agencies, and public organizations concerning neighborhood development projects;
Coordinates the review process of the City budget including the capital improvements, revenue sharing, and general and sinking fund budgets;
Writes reports and maintains records;
May supervise the activities of assigned Legislative Analysts.
