    The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech.

As part of Pharma Technical Development (PTD), our organization is committed to deliver the Pharma ambitions by bringing game-changing therapies from clinical phase I into the market to serve every patient, every day. Our core business is to develop safe, innovative and effective drugs using cutting edge technologies for manufacturing process (Drug Substance and Drug Product), clinical supply, formulation, device, packaging, and analytical development.

Together with our partners, Global Biologics Bioprocess Development develops robust, efficient, and sustainable bioprocesses including Cell Line & Media Development, Cell Culture & Fermentation, and Purification Development.

    The Opportunity:

Genentech’s Pharma Technical Development Purification Robotics & Modeling group is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to investigate, implement, and optimize high throughput miniaturized screening platforms to accelerate purification process development.

This postdoctoral project aims to significantly enhance development efficiency and reduce cycle time by developing high-throughput, low-mass screening techniques for assessing resin binding of hundreds of therapeutic products at a time. This project will explore and validate miniaturized approaches to characterize interactions between chromatography resins, candidate molecules, and their variants, enabling earlier assessment and rapid generation of process information. This early assessment will enable stronger connections between molecular design and process development, where the postdoctoral fellow can help support optimal design of candidate molecules with reduced manufacturability risks.

The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts across the organization in automation, process development, analytics, modeling, and research, opening new areas of investigation when the opportunity arises. The broad exposure the candidate will experience will help to define and guide their career path.

    Who You Are:

+ Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related engineering or science discipline

+ Strong work ethic, must be self-motivated, flexible, able to multitask, and meet timelines efficiently and productively

+ Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams

+ Strong use of critical thinking to design, analyze, and troubleshoot experiments

+ Ability to translate scientific literature in practical solutions

    Preferred Qualifications:

+ Knowledge of protein purification principles, analytical techniques, and high throughput screening techniques

+ Hands-on experience with laboratory automation and robotic systems, such as liquid handlers (e.g. TECAN, Hamilton)

+ Experience with protein binding assays a plus

+ Experience with computational modeling of physical or chemical processes a plus

+ Proficiency in Python, VB, VBA, and/or R a plus

For information about purification, robotics, and modeling work in our group, please see our recent publication (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39782766/) .
