Job Summary
This position will cover all Michigan Medicine MSK Ultrasound Locations (Taubman Center, Domino Farms, Northville, Brighton) and will include the following shifts: Week days
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for the performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is also responsible for daily operations of the sonographic department, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.

Responsibilities*
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
+ Perform clinical assessment and diagnostic MSK sonography examinations independently and draft Radiology reports for each performed exam following the established dictation process.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Analyze and adjust technical factors for accurate demonstration of minute defects and abnormalities of the MSK system.
+ Use sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
+ Use independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.
+ Ability to evaluate and communicate diagnostic information to the Radiologist and clinical team to include preliminary results given orally and/or in written format.
+ Communicate effectively with the patient which may include preliminary examination results. Recognize the special needs of each patient.
+ Large role in teaching and training students, residents and fellows in mastering intricate anatomy and pathological processes.
+ Assist in image-guided procedures.
+ Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships and good rapport with all interrelating hospital/clinical staff or outside referring clinics.
+ Assume responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
+ Maintain knowledge of and observe Universal precautions and all other precautions determined by the University of Michigan Health System.
+ Understands and applies Guest Relations skills and demonstrates excellent customer service (following the Department of Radiology's Service Excellence Program). Must maintain patient confidentiality at all times under HIPPA. Uphold strong teamwork principles.
+ Effectively operate sonographic equipment and troubleshoot problems.
+ Assiss with the daily operations of the department.
+ Adapt to changing environments (flexible schedules, emergency conditions, protocol development, technology advancements).
+ Ability to follow established departmental procedures, policies.
+ Maintain proper data entry for: exam billing (CPT/ICD-10 codes).
+ Maintain proper data for: patient/exam/technologist information within the PACS system.
+ Maintain ultrasound equipment and work area and maintains adequate supplies.
+ Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.
+ Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
RELATED DUTIES:
+ Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
+ General supervision is received from a physician or designated supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
+ Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs), and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
+ Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning. Maintain awkward scanning, sitting, and standing positions for extended periods of time.
+ Must be able to push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs.
+ Ability to operate and use multiple computer programs in an efficient manner.
+ Ability to concentrate and focus attention, thoughts and efforts on patients and equipment for varying periods of time.
Required Qualifications*
+ Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
+ 1-year working experience in an inpatient hospital setting.
+ 3-5 years working experience in general sonography.
+ Active certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire.
+ Certification in ABD and OB/GYN is required within one year of hire date.
+ Certification in MSK is required within one year of hire date.
+ Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for all ARDMS certifications.
+ Maintain current BCLS Certification.

Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
