Radiology Service Engineer III

Under general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Engineering, the Radiology Service Engineer III is a senior-level imaging equipment specialist responsible for the independent maintenance, repair, installation, and optimization of complex diagnostic imaging systems, including CT, MRI, PET, interventional radiology, and advanced fluoroscopy equipment. This role requires expert-level troubleshooting, regulatory compliance oversight, and leadership in supporting the imaging service team. The Radiology Service Engineer III mentors Radiology Service Engineer I & II, manages high-priority technical projects, and ensures all imaging systems meet clinical, safety, and operational standards. This role functions with a high degree of technical expertise and autonomy. Radiology Service Engineer III position plays a key role in maintaining safe, functional, and available medical equipment for patients and care givers.
Duties Included, but are not limited to:
• Independently perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on all imaging modalities, including CT, MRI, interventional radiology, and hybrid imaging systems in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, departmental standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Lead complex troubleshooting efforts and resolve mechanical, electrical, software, and integration issues with minimal supervision.
• Respond to service calls in a timely and professional manner to minimize equipment downtime and clinical disruption.
• Perform electrical safety testing and documentation per organizational and regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, NFPA 99, FDA, ACR).
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repair, and inspection activities in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
• Maintains inventory of spare parts, tools, and test equipment required for imaging device support.
• Participate in on-call rotation, as assigned.
• Interface with radiology technologists, physicians, and vendors to support clinical needs and communicate service status.
• Provide technical training and mentorship to Radiology Service Engineer I & II.
• Follow hospital policies and procedures to ensure compliance with safety and infection control requirements.
• Participate in training and professional development to advance technical knowledge of radiology systems.
• Tag and inventory new equipment; performs equipment installations and relocations.
• Maintains parts, hand tools and test equipment inventory, ensuring cleanliness and organization of the workspace.
• Participate in on-the-job training and continuing education programs to develop technical skills.
• Stay informed about emerging technologies and changes in medical equipment regulations.
• Collaborate with other team members, physicists, vendors, and clinical departments to resolve image quality and connectivity issues.
• Lead equipment installation projects, coordinate vendor services, and verify adherence to OEM specifications.
• Other duty as requested by the Supervisor of Clinical Engineering.
Education • Associate’s degree in science or technology (BMET/EET) or military trained (BMET) Biomedical Equipment Technician. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience • 7 years of progressive experience servicing medical imaging equipment in a hospital or service organization.
Certificates • Preferred AAMI Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES)
Other Quals:
• Expert-level knowledge of diagnostic imaging systems, physics principles, and clinical workflows.
• Advanced troubleshooting and repair skills for complex electrical, mechanical, software, and network issues in imaging equipment.
• Ability to perform acceptance testing, calibration, and performance verification of new and upgraded imaging systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service documentation.
• Familiarity with CMMS software and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical, communication, and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between facilities as required.
• General radiographic and fluoroscopic systems (fixed and portable)
• Interventional radiology suites and C-arm systems
• Mammography & Bone densitometry units
• Experience with system integration, DICOM/PACS connectivity, and networked medical imaging workflows.
• Advanced CT, MRI, PET, and hybrid imaging systems
• Deep understanding of regulatory and safety standards, including IEC 60601, IEC 61000, NFPA 99, Joint Commission, FDA, and modality-specific guidelines.
• Skilled in the use of advanced test equipment, radiation measurement devices, safety analyzers, and diagnostic tools.
• Knowledge of equipment lifecycle management, preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, and reliability assessment.
