Position Summary:
A Junior System Administrator typically handles the daily maintenance and support of an organization’s IT infrastructure under the guidance of more experienced administrators. This role is great for someone who is building their career in IT and is learning to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot systems. Here's a breakdown of common responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
1. _System Monitoring and Maintenance:_ Monitor server health, networks, and other IT infrastructure for issues like performance bottlenecks, downtime, or security vulnerabilities. Perform routine backups and ensure systems are running with the latest software updates.
2. _Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution:_ Assist in diagnosing hardware, software, and network problems, and work to resolve them. Respond to system outages or disruptions and assist in recovery.
3. _User Support:_ Provide technical support to users by answering questions and helping resolve software or hardware-related problems. Manage user accounts, permissions, and access control (creating/deleting accounts, resetting passwords, etc.).
4. _System Configuration and Setup:_ Assist in the installation and configuration of new software or hardware. Work with senior admins to deploy and configure operating systems, applications, and other system resources. Perform as a lead over interns for Depot and Provisioning
5. _Documentation:_ Maintain detailed records of system configurations, troubleshooting steps, and maintenance procedures. Document technical issues and solutions for future reference.
6. _Backup and Recovery_ : Ensure regular backups are taken and verify their integrity. Help restore data and services in case of system failure or data loss
Skills and Qualifications:
1. _Technical Skills:_ Familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Linux), network protocols, and hardware troubleshooting. Network+ and Security+ courseware is sufficient
2. _Communication:_ Ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical staff and escalate when necessary.
3. _Remote Skills:_ Ability to remotely communicate over voice/Teams to adequately investigate and troubleshoot issues
4. _Problem-solving:_ Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Educational Requirements:
+ A degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is often preferred, though not always required.
+ Relevant certifications (like CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate) are beneficial.
+ Ability to read and interpret applicable documents, materials, policies, procedures, etc. as presented in English
This role provides a great foundation for more senior positions in system administration and IT management.
