Job Summary and Qualifications
Performs clinical laboratory testing on all ages of patients; inpatients, outpatients, and reference laboratory testing in accordance with applicable rules, and regulations. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of clinical laboratory procedures as they relate to the neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.

• Must be able to work under stressful conditions and still meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
• Minimal supervision needed.
• Must demonstrate "team spirit" in working with peers, patients, physicians, supervisors, other hospital employees, and physician office personnel.
• Participates in week-end, holiday, overtime, and other shift coverage to insure continuation of work flow.
• Dependable and good attendance.
• Ability to work and communicate with all employees.

Position responsibilities:
• Demonstrates competency and performs testing accurately in Hematology/Urinalysis/Coagulation · Performs assigned testing efficiently without sacrificing quality. (H/U/C) · Successfully participated in Proficiency testing and quality control. (H/U/C)
• Demonstrates competency and performs testing accurately in Chemistry
• Performs assigned testing efficiently without sacrificing quality. (C)
• Successfully participated in Proficiency testing and quality control. (C)
• Demonstrates competency and performs testing accurately in Blood Bank
• Performs assigned testing efficiently without sacrificing quality. (BB)
• Successfully participated in Proficiency testing and quality control. (BB)
• Demonstrates competency and performs testing accurately in Microbiology and Serology. (M/S)
• Reads plates and performs assigned testing efficiently without sacrificing quality. (M/S)
• Successfully participated in Proficiency testing and quality control. (M/S)
• Performs and records all clinical assays, controls, maintenance, etc. in all areas. Reports any questionable results, control, or instrument problems to technical supervisor, laboratory manager, and/or medical director as appropriate
• Performs and records instrument troubleshooting as indicated in procedure manual, instrument manual, and/or instructions from technical support specialist
• Insures that proper specimen is collected and stored properly for delayed or send-out testing
• Completes send-out log and all paperwork accurately so that testing is not delayed
• Registers patients, enter orders, and results accurately in the computer. Maintains working knowledge of the Columbia Patient Care System. Performs all applicable functions efficiently
• Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin puncture accurately on adolescents and adults using proper technique and adhering to all safety policies
• Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin puncture accurately on geriatric patients using proper technique and adhering to all safety policies
• Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin puncture accurately on neo-natal and pediatric patients. Does not avoid this age group and yet demonstrates compassion and understanding of special needs of child and parents
• Adheres to and demonstrates safety awareness including, but not limited to Universal Precautions, Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan, the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and equipment usage ·
Participates in inventory control, rotation of supplies, and collection of inventory data
• Participates in training students and/or other employees
• Participates in receiving specimens and answering the telephone
• Participates in performing linearity testing, calibration verification, setting up new test procedures, writing procedures, and/or setting up dictionaries in the laboratory computer
• Assists in collection of data for Quality Assurance and Chart Audits
• Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department
• Attend Code of Conduct training course annually
• Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct
• Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct
• Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)
• Must Adhere to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy
Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:
• Above average communication skills in all forms
• Four (4) year degree in a chemical, physical, biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
• Must be registry eligible or certified by a recognized accrediting agency. · Must obtain certification within one year of hire · Certification: BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital
