    Job Summary and Qualifications

     

    Performs clinical laboratory testing on all ages of our patient population; inpatients, outpatients, and reference laboratory testing in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of clinical laboratory testing as it relates to the neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. Is responsible for the day-to-day operation, quality control, quality assurance, and record keeping of their assigned technical area(s).

    Behavioral characteristics:

    • Must demonstrate a high degree or accuracy and precision and attention to detail.

    • Must communicate or cooperate with peers, patients, physicians, supervisors, other hospital departments, and management.

    • Must be able to perform assignments with minimal supervision.

    • Participates in week-end, holiday, "overtime," and other shift coverage to insure continuation of work flow.

    • Demonstrates behaviors that are relative to the HCA Mission and Values Statement: “We act with absolute honesty, integrity and fairness in the way we conduct our business and the way we live our lives.”

    Position responsibilities:

    • Demonstrates competency in all assigned areas

    • Performs and completes assigned Bench work in a timely manner; i.e. documents clinical competency of technical staff when hired, after failed proficiency testing, and annually thereafter · Documents clinical competency of technical staff when hired, after failed proficiency testing, and annually thereafter

    • Oversees and evaluates the Quality Control process in assigned section. Submits QC data for statistical evaluation timely

    • Is aware and takes prompt corrective action for any out of control situation that exists in assigned area. Notifies Laboratory Manager and/or Medical Director when appropriate

    • Compiles and sends proficiency testing results to appropriate agency timely. Insures that all personnel rotate the performance of proficiency testing and that all proficiency testing is performed and handled consistently with any patient testing

    • Insures that linearity studies and calibration verification is performed as necessary

    • Maintains up to date Procedure Manuals. Reviews and maintains Medical Director's review of Procedure Manuals annually

    • Insures that maintenance and calibration of all equipment is performed as required

    • Oversees and participates in collection of data for Quality Assurance and Chart Audits in a timely manner

    • Directs and participates in inventory control, rotation of supplies, and collection of inventory data. Observes reagents to avoid use of outdated reagents

    • Oversees training of new employees and students · Adheres to, demonstrates, and oversees safety awareness including, but not limited to Universal Precautions, Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure Plan, the Chemical Hygiene Plan, all safety policies, and equipment usage

    • Maintains LIS dictionaries as needed. Demonstrates competency in all applicable aspects of the Columbia Patient Care System

    • Communicates well with employees. Promotes fairness. Holds all employees accountable for work performed in section

    • Keeps management informed and advised of section operation, problems, impending problems, and/or opportunities

    • Arranges and/or gives at least one continuing education project or presentation during evaluation period

    • Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin punctures of all ages served; neo-natal, pediatric adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and demonstrate leadership by participation

    • Other assigned duties that are related to the essential functions

    • Participates in interviewing, and hiring

    • Participates in counseling and makes recommendation for discipline or discharge to Laboratory Manager

    • Participates in employee performance evaluations

    • Participates in annual expense and capital budget recommendations

    • Attend Code of Conduct training course annually

    • Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct

    • Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct

    • Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)

    • Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy

    Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:

    • Above average communication skills in all forms

    • B.A. or B.S. Degree required from a recognized school and 4 years experience in a lab setting with six months in specialty supervised.

    • Must be registered or certified by a recognized accrediting agency.

    • Certification: BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital
