    JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

    The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia is recruiting candidates for a non-tenure-track faculty position within the Division of Diagnostic Medical Physics. Successful candidates will join a seasoned and dedicated team supporting clinical imaging physics across our Health System as part of the nation’s 4th-ranked public university.

     

    The Diagnostic Medical Physicist plays a critical role in clinical practice by ensuring the safe and effective use of radiation to achieve accurate diagnostic outcomes, in alignment with patient care plans and under the direction of the Chief Medical Physicist. This role involves performing or supervising all technical procedures necessary to support this objective throughout the Health System.

     

    Key responsibilities include safeguarding patients and staff from unnecessary or harmful radiation exposure; developing and maintaining protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry; measuring and characterizing radiation output; determining delivered doses; and advancing techniques to improve image quality. The Diagnostic Medical Physicist also leads quality assurance programs and collaborates with other healthcare professionals to optimize the balance between diagnostic benefits and potential risks of radiation. In addition, the position ensures compliance with all applicable federal and Commonwealth of Virginia regulations.

     

    For the purposes of this role, the “Health System” includes, but is not limited to, UVA Imaging and affiliated UVA Health facilities.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Perform acceptance tests, calibrations, and safety surveys of imaging equipment.

    + Consult with radiologists regarding patient or fetal doses; assist with dosimetry, imaging, and localization studies.

    + Consult with physicians and patients regarding radiation exposure and safety.

    + Teach and mentor within the Diagnostic Medical Physics Residency Program.

    + Teach lectures within the diagnostic radiology residents’ year-long physics course.

    + Deliver continuing education programs for medical students, graduate students, physicians, nurses, technologists, ancillary personnel, and other staff to ensure safety and compliance with current practice and standards.

    + Ensure accreditation of modalities as directed by the Chief Diagnostic Medical Physicist.

    + Develop, implement, and supervise quality control programs in multiple departments, including but not limited to radiology and cardiology.

    + Serve as a member of applicable committees, such as the Radiation Safety Committee, Radioactive Drug Research Committee, Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, and the Human Investigations Involving Radiation Exposure Committee.

    REQUIREMENTS

    + **PhD or MS degree in Medical Physics or a related field.**

    + **One year of experience preferred.**

    + **Board certification by the American Board of Radiology or other applicable specialty board within two years.**

    + **Ability to obtain a Virginia Department of Health X-ray Private Inspector License within one year.**

     

    Job duties require standing for prolonged periods (up to four hours), often while wearing a protective apron. The position may involve exposure to radiation. Frequent bending/stooping and repetitive or extensive overhead reaching may be required. Strong verbal communication skills and excellent auditory and visual abilities are essential. Candidates must demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to write legibly. The ability to lift, push, or pull 20–50 lbs is required. Candidates must also be able to drive, travel short distances by automobile, and transport equipment.

     

    Position Compensation Range: $130,440.00 - $260,881.00 Annual
