    Job Summary and Responsibilities

     

    The Medical Assistant works in collaboration with the physicians, Clinic Director and other members of the staff to provide clinical and administrative functions for comprehensive patient care. The Medical Assistant must be acquainted with policies and procedures directly involved in the standard practices of the administration of theclinic and treatment of the patient. The Medical Assistant acts as an assistant to the physician, or advanced practice practitioner and performs such duties as obtaining treatment authorization requests (TARs), refill

     

    prescription requests, assists physician and practitioner with minor surgical procedures, PAP smears, dressing changes, etc. The Medical Assistant acts as the patient advocate and performs those duties necessary to treat the patient's physical, emotional and spiritual needs. All activities carried out by the Medical Assistant reflects those values espoused in the Dignity Health, SMMC mission statement and vision.

     

    Under the direction of the Management Team, the Medical Assistant (MA) administers direct patient care in accordance with physicians' orders and under the supervision of a licensed physician who must be in the department during the performance of MA duties. The MA is responsible for checking patients in to the clinic and performing vital signs, weight, pulse oximetry and annual outpatient assessment prior to scheduled visit. Assists the physician during minor medical procedures. Administers medications as ordered by the physician and verified by RN or MD. The MA is also responsible for patient check out ensuring that MD orders are carried out prior to patients' departure. The MA is required to document all patient contact in the medical record. FRONT OFFICE: Under the direction of the Management Team, the Medical Assistant may be asked to coordinate front office functions such as correspondence, copying, filing, managing telephones, collecting all demographic and financial information as applicable, running patient insurance status through established protocols, attaching appropriate paper work to charts, scheduling of patient appointments, and other support activities that assist the medical and ancillary staff. The front office medical assistant assists patients as they call or come into the clinic for appointments by being courteous and referring them as appropriate.

    Job Requirements

    + At least three years of outpatient ambulatory/outpatient clinic care experience in the field of Internal Medicine.

    + Valid Medical Assistant Certificate (CCMA)

    + High School Graduate or GED Graduate

    + Bilingual skills in English and Spanish

    + Knowledge of outpatient clinical administrative procedures including familiarity with common billing protocols.

    + Must be able to provide a certificate indicating satisfactory completion of training by an accredited or approved institution for medical assistants and verification of Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

    + BLS for HealthCare Provider required.

    + Strong computer skills including the ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments required.

    Pay Range

    $26.04 - $32.68 /hour
