    Bookstore Assistant

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Bookstore Assistant is responsible for operating a point of sale system and providing assistance to customers in a technical college bookstore. Under general supervision, operates point of sale system and provides assistance to customers in a technical college bookstore. Checks and balances cash register receipts. Assists with the day-to-day operation of the bookstore. Assists with sales and promotional activities. Assists with conducting inventory. May calculate and post bookstore charges. Performs general clerical duties.

    MAJOR DUTIES

    • Assists with the day-to-day operation of the technical college bookstore;

    o Opens and closes the technical college bookstore to the campus and public during established store hours as requested;

    o Trains and schedules part-time cashiers, if needed;

    o Keeps shelves adequately supplied with textbooks, supplies, clothing, snacks, drinks, and other merchandise; Rotates stock as needed;

    o Assists with maintaining an orderly and clean environment in and around the store, keeping aisles clear of clutter, grounds free of litter, and abiding by all rules and regulations related to fire safety and the American Disability Act;

    o Greets customers in a pleasing manner, answers questions from students and instructors, and assists with book selections;

    • Receives assigned money and accurately counts funds to verify amount assigned;

    • Collects money and gives correct change to paying customers of the bookstore, ensuring accuracy and safety of receipts;

    • Resolves pricing errors, correcting cash register entries and recalculating incorrect sales transactions;

    • Checks and balances cash register receipts at the close of the day;

    o Balances money against register recordings after closing out with few or no errors;

    o Reports any discrepancies immediately to supervisor;

    o Maintains accurate and legible records as required;

    o May remit bank deposits to appropriate personnel on an established basis;

    • Prepares bank deposits;

    • Assists with sales and other promotional activities to increase daily sales and community awareness;

    o Assists in the displaying of merchandise in an attractive manner to invite positive customer response;

    o Mentions special sales and/or promotions to customers in a courteous manner;

    o Ensures retail sales prices are clearly marked or displayed on or beneath items;

    • Assists with inventory of textbooks and supplies;

    o Accurately counts and measures textbooks and supplies in stock and records data appropriately on an established basis;

    o Reports loss, damage or description of property to supervisor immediately;

    • Stocks shelves with books and supplies;

    • Calculates and posts bookstore charges to student accounts and worksheets;

    o Correctly calculates and posts bookstore charges to student Banner accounts on an established basis;

    o Accurately enters data on worksheets within established time frames;

    • Performs general clerical duties;

    o Answers, screens and routes telephone calls promptly and courteously to appropriate staff; Delivers complete, accurate, and legible messages in a timely manner;

    o Completes required reports and other documentation accurately and in a timely manner; Thoroughly reviews reports and corrects or resolves any discrepancies;

    • Accurately types, proofreads and corrects letters, forms and other documents;

    o Properly responds to all inquiries and requests for information in a courteous and timely manner;

    • Participates in assessment, planning, budgeting, and staff development;

    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    COMPETENCIES

    • Ability to understand the relationship between student information and financial systems

    • Ability to work independently

    • Skill in the operation of cash registers, computers and job-related software programs

    • Decision making and problem-solving skills

    • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public

    • Oral and written communication skills

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • High school diploma or equivalent *and* One (1) year work of related work experience

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    In addition to the minimum qualifications:

    • Technical Diploma in Business Administrative Technology or related field

    • Two years of experience using point-of-sale (POS) systems and cash-handling procedures

    • Experience handling inventory, stocking, and organizing retail products

    • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
