    *ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS*

     

    This is a faculty position responsible to the Chairman of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery who reports to the Head of the Division of Surgery.

     

    *GENERAL DUTIES *

     

    Provides clinical expertise in patient care management for patients referred for care in a satellite facility practice setting. Also participates in protocol clinical trials, and laboratory or translational research.

     

    *CHARACTERISTICS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES *

    Clinical 80% Effort

    **a.**Represents the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in local, regional, state and national matters pertaining to the field of TCVS. Will require traveling to sites outside the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by verbally or in writing sharing with department colleagues.

    **b.**Practice clinical surgery in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by The Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Surgeons, properly balanced with other academic activities.

    i. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty. This may require standing bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.

    ii. Develop and maintain a clinical practice for cardiovascular surgery patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at Houston Area Location, League City.

     

    Work in concert with other disciplines to grow the Region Care Lung Cancer Center patient population.

     

    Provide physician staffing for the Houston Area Location, League City at a level commensurate with the service that is provided by other thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons with the same level of training and experience. This will include having the mental and physical dexterity required for performing complex surgical operations on patients afflicted with thoracic and cardiovascular diseases.

     

    Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all surgical procedure charge documents within 5 working days.

     

    iii. Complete patient documentation for medical records within the time frames provided by institutional policy. Will require dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.

    iv. Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with referring patients regarding patient care and treatment.

    v. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients by attending continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require the listening to and assimilating information from the conferences.

    vi. Request appropriate medical consultations for TCVS patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.

    **c.**Provide a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, mid-level providers, students, and clinical staff.

    **d.**Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.

    **e.**Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.

    *Administrative 5% Effort *

    a. Attend conferences/workshops/training, write manuscripts, referring provider relations activities, participating in quality improvement activities.

    Research 5% Effort

    **a.**Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the department.

    *Education/Teaching 10***% Effort **

    **b.**Attend and participate in Division/Department/ teaching and continuing education conferences.

    R ** equirements: **

    Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to

    • faculty role

    • department mission

    • Licensed to practice State of Texas

    • Board certified (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted

    • At least 2 years experience as Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a

    o clinician

    o clinical scientist or

    o GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships)

     

    This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening. The ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of such infrastructure is a condition of hire and continued employment.
