Employee must possess a basic knowledge of fish biology and fish culture/husbandry. 3. Employee will possess good speaking, writing and computer skills. 4. Employee must possess good math skills, including statistics and algebra. 5. Employee will handle the physical demands of the position {capable of lifting and carrying 50Ibs or more daily at one time), sometimes over rough and hazardous terrain. 6. State housing may become available with this position. Employee will be required to stay in State housing, when available. 7. Employee is to perform fish and water supply duties during business hours, after hours, weekends, and holidays on rotating shifts with staff. 8. The Fish Culture Specialist 1 position is considered an Exempt Comp Time position. This means any hours worked over 40 will be set up as time for time (hour for hour) and will be used as time off and not overtime pay. 9. Employee may be required to obtain a Class B CDL, over 26,000 GWR, with air brake and tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire. 10.Miles City Hatchery is a multi-species pumped facility. You will be required to safely run tractors, skid steer, mowers, 1.5-ton distribution trucks, ATVs, UTVs. You will help maintain the pumps and filter systems of the hatchery. The job is mostly outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather. Southeastern Montana can get very hot and dry in the summers and very cold in the winters. You will assist in the propagating, rearing and distribution of warm, cool, and cold water fish species. 11.The work schedule is generally 7:30 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday. There are exceptions during our peak production months. Once you have been sufficiently trained, you will be added to the call rotation with the other hatchery staff. This means you will be responsible for the safety and security of the facility and fish after hours. You will be provided a shared call phone that will receive alarm pages from the hatchery during your on-call time. 12.Southeastern Montana is full of adventure and history, from hiking in the Badlands to watching bronc riders and bucking horses, or filling your buckets with fossils or agates, there is so much beauty in our corner of the Big Sky State. 13.The hatchery is located just outside of Miles City, just enough to make you feel out of town but close enough to grab a delicious burger for lunch. The hatchery has a gorgeous, unobstructed view of the southern sky-you might just catch a lightning show or a picturesque sunset to the west. There is an abundance of public land scattered across SE Montana, perfect for hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. *Job Duties*: Plan and participate in the daily fish culture operations of Miles City Hatchery to meet the fish production & stocking needs as identified by the Hatchery Manager, statewide stocking plan, six-year fish production/allocation plan, Endangered Species recovery plan. Maintain and operate all infrastructure of the facility to assure long-term operational viability. To supervise hatchery seasonal staff, intern and volunteers to meet program goals and objectives including employee training. Conduct equipment and supply inventories and assist with purchasing to keep hatchery operationally viable and economically efficient. Respond to public inquires and to public outreach to maintain and develop public support from all public(s) for FWP, the Miles City Hatchery, and the Montana's Hatchery Program. Assure that the facility meets state and federal requirements for public and employee safety. Record keeping and reports writing to meet state and federal needs. **Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):** * Basic fish culture techniques for warm, cool and cold-water fish propagation * Fish handling and transportation and the systems used for these * Successful spawning of fish and transferred eggs * Fish disease identification and management * Good math skills * Knowledge of basic fish biology * Basic computer skills for Excel, MS Word, Hatch or Power Point (or similar applications) * Good communication skills: verbal and written. * Basic mechanical skills for facility and equipment maintenance * Basic knowledge of construction methods and tools * Ability to manage multiple tasks and time management *Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):* The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Fisheries, Aquaculture, Environmental Sciences, Zoology, Wildlife, or associated field and at least 1 year of job-related experience.
