Description of Job
Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Resource Stewardship Program is seeking to fill a temporary
biological/GIS technician position. This is a 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, position and is
based in north Denver. This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of
Conservation Biology and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.
The Resource Stewardship Program is responsible for supporting state park operations and
decision-making through the collection and application of scientific information for all natural and
cultural resources. This position’s responsibilities will primarily include assisting in the
management of the Program’s GIS data and standards, development of cartographic products,
database management, assisting/training program staff and troubleshooting GIS issues. This
will include the preparation of GIS data and maps for park stewardship plans, biological
research, threatened & endangered species analysis, field based biological/botanical surveys and
monitoring, program planning, site visits, and administrative duties. The Technician will also be
responsible for database and geodatabase development to include the migration of and
improvement to existing information.
The Technician will conduct research on biological and geophysical aspects of the parks and
write reports and summaries on various aspects. The Technician will conduct other program
administrative tasks such as organizing/filing electronic and paper files. There will be a field
component using ESRI Field Maps to map resources on the parks and the applicant should be
physically able and willing to hike and camp and have own camping equipment (tent and
sleeping bag).
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
+ Applicants should have a bachelor's degree and a background in ecology, wildlife, botany,
geology, park management, natural resources, forestry, GIS or related fields.
+ Must be proficient with ArcGIS Pro and Microsoft Office experience using Excel, Word, and
Access is required.
+ The ability to work with autonomy, good organizational skills, as well as good written and
oral communication skills is required.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
+ At least 1 year of experience using ArcGIS Pro software.
+ Experience with ArcGIS tools and maintaining/populating databases.
+ Ability to create GIS maps to illustrate on-the-ground natural resource conditions.
+ Basic understanding of Colorado natural resource management laws/regulations and
public land management principles.
+ Knowledge of wildlife and vegetation known to inhabit Colorado.
+ Experience and familiarity with the use of ESRI Field Maps and ArcGIS Online.
+ Strong work ethic, be organized and have the ability to work in a fast paced setting both
independently and on teams.
+ Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, develop reports and present
information both orally and in writing.
+ Must have (or obtain) a Colorado Driver's license.
