    Project Description:

    The Transmission Planning Intern will assist the Transmission Planning team in conducting system studies that enhance the reliability, stability, and efficiency of the transmission grid in Colorado and also the broader Western Interconnection. The role offers hands-on experience performing steady-state, dynamic, and electromagnetic transient (EMT) analyses to support real-world planning and operational decisions at one of the leading utilities of the United States.

    Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

    • Perform steady-state load flow and contingency analyses to evaluate system performance under normal and stressed conditions.

    • Conduct dynamic stability studies to assess system response to faults, disturbances, large load like data centers / hyperscalers and high renewable integration.

    • Support electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies to analyze converter dynamics, switching events, SSO, control system interactions, etc.

    • Develop and validate detailed transmission network models using tools such as PSS®E, PSLF, TARA, DSATools, PSCAD.

    • Interpret study results and prepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external audiences.

    • Collaborate with teams in operations, protection, and modeling to ensure study consistency and alignment with planning standards.

    Learning Outcomes and Mentorship

    • Gain practical experience in applying advanced power system analysis techniques to real transmission networks.

    • Learn how a leading transmission planning team coordinate across departments to ensure grid reliability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

    • Receive mentorship from experienced engineers specializing in steady-state, dynamic, and EMT modeling.

    • Develop professional skills through presentations, technical writing, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

    • Opportunity to network and collaborate with industry professionals and research experts in power systems.

     

    This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited institution obtaining a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.

    • Bachelor’s students must have completed at least one course in power systems analysis.

    • Graduate students should have a specialization in power systems analysis, dynamics, or control, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed conference or journal.

    • Familiarity with power flow, transient, or stability analysis tools.

    • Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience with power system simulation platforms such as PSS®E, PSLF, Power World, PSCAD.

    • Understanding of inverter-based resource modeling and integration.

    • Working knowledge of NERC reliability standards and regional transmission planning guidelines.

    • Able to commute to the corporate office and local resident to Denver, CO.

    • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).

    Non-Bargaining

     

    The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $24.00 to $30.10 per hour
