Summary About the Position: Serves as a Supervisor Drill Rig Operator for the District, which is one of the nine Drilling Production Centers. Responsible for work activities involved in the accomplishment of core drilling operations and explorations being conducted throughout the district. Responsibilities Serves as Supervisor over work crews engaged in carrying out the district's subsurface explorations and field investigations. Provides technical and administrative leadership for and directs and guides the work activities of the drill crews. Evaluates progress of work through review of reports and by visiting work sites throughout the district to assure that quality standards and quantity requirements are being followed. Provides training and development opportunities for drilling helpers and junior drillers to support their technical progression and advancement. Approves leave, rates performance of subordinates, recommends personnel and disciplinary actions, interviews and recommends selection of new employees, settles grievances, enforces safety regulations, and performs other normal supervisory functions. Represents the work crews in meetings with customers and provides technical insight regarding drilling functions. Maximizes core recovery and quality when utilizing standards, double barrel wireline, and triple barrel wireline coring techniques. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks as the carrying out the supervisory duties of the district's subsurface explorations and field investigations. I have the ability to provide technical and administrative leadership for the work activities of the drill crews. I have the ability to receive, review, and interpret work directives; determine work methods, and equipment requirements for the job; develop time and cost estimates for subsurface requirements, utilizing the organization and personnel provided. I have the ability to assigns drill crews to specific jobs, explaining work requirements, standards of production, and schedules to be met, answering any questions to ensure a complete understanding of the work to be accomplished. I have the ability to work with field party to resolve difficult operational problems such as those caused by inaccessible terrain, unforeseen subsurface conditions, etc. I have the ability to evaluates progress of work through review of reports and by visiting work sites throughout the district to assure that quality standards and quantity requirements are being followed. I have the ability ascertain whether supplies and equipment are adequate to accomplish assigned projects, and as required, initiates timely actions for additional supplies and equipment. I have the ability to inspect operation of machinery and equipment to assure that they are used to their fullest capacities and are properly maintained. I have the ability to check the adequacy of personnel assigned to specific tasks, determining whether improvement can be made by taking action to change personnel, equipment, etc. I have the ability to provide training and development opportunities for drilling helpers and junior drillers to support their technical progression and advancement. Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Related to Mobile Equipment Operation) Ability To Lead or Supervise Ability to Operate Safely (Non-motor Vehicles) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability as a Drill Rig Operator Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Effort: Work involves standing for prolonged periods, walking, bending, pushing, reaching, pulling and lifting. Considerable physical exertion is required due to the large size of the drill rigs and the difficulty in manipulating the controls. A high level of reflex action is required in responding to unpredictable formation changes, overburden conditions, and core recovery problems. Frequently handles objects weighing 40 to75 pounds and occasionally as much as 150 pounds. Working Conditions: Works outside in all kinds of weather, exposed to poison growth, reptiles and insects, and under noisy conditions. Is exposed to cuts and bruises, strain and danger of falling while working from river barges. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a(n) CP-18 Engineers & Scientists Career Field position. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
