Are you up for the challenge? This position will operate a variety of medium and light equipment within our department.

You will be at the forefront of our operations, responsible for operating a range of mini to medium-sized equipment, including but not limited to including a tandem-axle dump truck, single axle dump truck, backhoe, road roller, skid-steer loader, compressed air tools, etc., in all phases of stormwater infrastructure and road construction (scarifying, blading, compaction, equipment transportation, excavations, etc.). Conducts daily inspection, routine maintenance, and light repair on such equipment. Performs a variety of manual labor task such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, asphalt leveling and raking, brush removal, lifting, pushing, and other heavy physical work. Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when operating and working near medium / small equipment. Duties are performed under supervision.

Position reports under the Maintenance and Operations Branch of Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division at 10635 West Drive Fairfax Va. 22030.

Note: This position is required to be available 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Motor Equipment Operator position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and, two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

+ A valid driver's license.

+ A Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).

+ Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.

+ Must obtain CDL Class "A" designation within 3 months of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Five years of work experience operating mini to medium sized equipment.

+ Ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility location prior to excavation.

+ Ability to operate a skid-steer

+ Ability to operate a backhoe and carry grade

+ Experienced in snow plowing operations using a dump truck, skid-steer, or a backhoe.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, personal fall arrest harness. With assistance, replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 lbs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:

Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
