Starting Salary: $73,775

Pay will increase incrementally as trainees progress through the training program. Upon successful completion of the training program, Instrument Mechanic salary is $105,390.

Description:

If you like to see how complicated machinery works and troubleshoot problems, then this program may be for you! Instrument Mechanics maintain power station instrumentation and control equipment; perform corrective maintenance; monitor equipment; and perform process-control failure analyses.

This is a 2-1/2 year training program leading to the position of Instrument Mechanic at a Nuclear Power Plant. The training consists of a combination of on-the-job training, self-study, computer-based training, and classroom instruction.

Duties:

All instrument mechanic trainees in TVA fall under the guidelines of the Joint Training Plan (JTP) between TVA and the Trades & Labor Council and are specifically covered under Appendix V (Instrument Mechanic Trainee Training Plan) to the JTP.

In order to gain experience and training to become an instrument mechanic the incumbent will assist a journeyman, senior instrument mechanic, or engineer in performing various assignments and under his/her supervision and direction shall perform assignments of a less complex nature.

A major portion of the incumbent’s assignments will consist of assisting a journeyman or senior in the calibration and repair of mechanical and electrical instruments which measure pressure, temperature, vacuum, draft, liquid level, vibration, proximity, radiation, pH, density, and flow and the calibration and repair of automatic control devices which regulate liquid level, feed-water flow, furnace draft, furnace combustion, steam flow, nuclear reaction, steam flow, and superheat temperature.

A minor portion of the incumbent’s assignments will consist of assisting a journeyman or senior in the calibration and repair of miscellaneous plant instruments, recording, and control devices.

In the performance of these duties, under the direction and supervision of a journeyman or senior instrument mechanic, he/she inspects tests, disconnects, removes, disassembles repairs, reassembles (installing new parts as required or repairing defective parts), reinstalls, connects, calibrates, checks, and returns to service, instruments including actuating connections and control equipment. The instruments and their actuating and control equipment may be actuated by electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or thermal means or any combination of these.

The incumbent shall be required to complete assigned technical and related training in classroom or self study. Various OJT assignments will be give to trainees and require satisfactory completion as measured in task qualification cards. Lessons will be assigned on plant equipment and are to be successfully completed in a timely manner as the trainee progresses through the program.

As experience and ability increase, assignments are varied to include work of a more difficult nature. After a trainee exhibits he/she can perform a certain task by task qualification card completion, the trainee can be assigned to perform the task independently.

Requirements:

+ Must receive a qualifying score on the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) pre-entrance exam.

+ Will be required to progress satisfactorily on periodic examinations throughout the program.

+ Must meet all qualification requirements established in the training plan.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology from a regionally accredited educational institution, or one of the following equivalencies:

+ At least 43 semester credit hours of coursework from a regionally accredited college or university towards an electrical or electronics degree that includes at least 6 semester credit hours of college-level algebra, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus and 12 semester credit hours of college-level electrical/electronics theory (AC/DC fundamentals, solid-state electronics, and digital).

+ A 4-year non-technical degree from a regionally accredited college or university that includes at least 6 semester credit hours of college-level algebra, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus and 12 semester credit hours of college-level electrical/electronics theory (AC/DC fundamentals, solid-state electronics, and digital) or physics that includes electrical theory.

+ Two or more years' documented work experience and training in electrical/instrument maintenance received while a member of the armed forces including and providing technical electrical/instrument maintenance experience totaling greater than 6 months of working independently AND 2 credits of high school or 6 semester credit hours of college-level algebra, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus.

+ Two or more years' documented industrial work experience and training in electrical/instrument maintenance received while a member of industry including and providing technical electrical/instrument maintenance experience totaling greater than 6 months of working independently AND 2 credits of high school or 6 semester credit hours of college-level algebra, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus.
