    Position Summary:

    The Science Communicator will play a key role in translating the Center for Natural Resources’ (CNR) scientific research and community-based projects into accessible, engaging, and impactful written content. This position bridges the gap between technical research and public understanding by developing articles, web features, press releases, and social media narratives that highlight the Center’s work on water quality, climate resilience, stormwater management, and sustainability.

     

    The role requires a strong ability to interpret complex environmental research, interview scientists and project leads, and craft compelling stories that resonate with diverse audiences from community stakeholders to funding agencies and the general public.

    Essential Functions:

    -Research, write, and edit articles, blogs, and feature stories based on CNR’s ongoing and completed research projects.

     

    -Provide progress reports to Dr. Boufadel.

     

    -Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Center Director

    Prerequisite Qualifications:

    -The qualified candidate would have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Science Communication, Environmental Science, or a related field.

     

    -At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    -Master’s degree in Science Communication, Environmental Policy, or related disciplines.

     

    -Experience working with research centers, government-funded environmental projects (e.g., NJDEP, EPA, NOAA)

     

    -Portfolio of published articles, blog posts, or outreach materials in science or sustainability communication.

     

    -Familiarity with social media strategy, multimedia storytelling, or digital engagement analytics.

     

    -Experience collaborating with scientists, engineers, and community partners on outreach initiatives.

    Salary Information:

    In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate for this position is $35.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
