Duties
The incumbent is responsible for general laborer duties for all TVA operations including work such as: assisting plant maintenance crews; performing deckhand work on barges; grounds’ maintenance that includes picking up and removing trash and garbage; sweeping and mopping floors, stairwells and walls; setting up meeting rooms; and performing cleanup duties as well as other duties as assigned. The incumbent mows, irrigates, prunes, and trims hedges and shrubbery. The incumbent assists with cultivating, harvesting, seeding, fertilizing, fumigating, removing weeds in and around TVA facilities, and cleaning drainage ditches. The incumbent cleans and neatly stores away tools and plant equipment, and reports needed maintenance to supervisor. The incumbent lubricates the equipment the incumbent operates and is responsible for making adjustments and, as required, replacing disposable parts. Cleans boilers, ash hoppers, spillages of coal; and trash racks; and does other cleaning jobs in connection with power house maintenance.
The incumbent moves boxes, furniture and equipment, and other items necessary to relocate personnel. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and set-up of audio-visual equipment. The incumbent assists in loading and unloading trucks. The incumbent assists in assembly and disassembly, packing and unpacking, crating and uncrating of furniture, panels, office equipment, components, and other materials.
Qualifications
The incumbent must be physically qualified and able to work off ladders, scaffolds and high places. Must be willing to perform heavy work both inside and outside the building and in the field in all weather. Must be willing and able to work irregular hours and days as the work load demands. Must know and understand precautions to be taken with equipment operated to prevent damage to it and other equipment. Must be safe and steady worker with the ability to study safety manuals and follow written and oral instructions. Must have a valid driver’s license and must be able to drive a pick-up truck. Must have a high school education or be able to read, write and comprehend. Must be proficient in basic data entry/retrieval.
Supervision Received
The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the laborer supervisor. On occasion the employee may be assigned to work directly under other crafts’ workers or operators. At times, the employee works in other sections of the organization and may receive work assignments form the principal supervisor in charge at the work location. Adheres to all plant procedures, safe work practices, and the specific practices outlined by the foreman or journeyman with whom the employee is working in the plant and at other areas as directed by the foreman.
