    Job Description

    Purpose:

    The Nuclear Engineering & Science Center’s (NESC) Reactor Facilities play an important role in the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station’s (TEES) mission of performing research and leveraging expertise from universities, national laboratories, and state and federal agencies to improve lives through basic and applied engineering research. The Reactor Facilities provide support to instructional and research programs for all TAMUS colleges and departments as well as other organizations state-wide, nationally, and internationally. The two reactors are the foundation of the NESC, consisting of a 1-Megawatt TRIGA (NSCR) and a 5-Watt AGN along with associated research and service facilities and infrastructure.

     

    This position is responsible for assisting the NESC Assistant/Associate Director of Operations with the operations of the two nuclear research reactors at the facility. The Reactor Supervisor plays a key role in ensuring and maintaining the continued safe and efficient operations in a dynamic research, education, and service environment in a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)-licensed facility. This position oversees the day-to-day reactor operations and staff, the employee training program, periodic inspection and maintenance, isotope production, and other reactor activities, including maintaining the operations, production, and maintenance schedules. In addition, the Reactor Supervisor will support and counsel external users (commercial and research) accessing the TRIGA reactor.

    Responsibilities:

    + Supervising the day-to-day reactor operations and staff for the 1 MW TRIGA reactor at the NESC.

    + Maintaining and scheduling the operations calendar for both reactors with support of the Assistant/Associate Director of Operations and the Reactor Staff.

    + Managing the reactor staff schedule to ensure adequate coverage of all shifts based on operational and research needs.

    + Ensuring adequate manpower and training for operations and shipping.

    + Overseeing operations checklists and procedures, regular maintenance activities, and safety matters.

    + Ensuring operational compliance in accordance with NRC regulations, TAMU procedures, and maintaining safe work conditions.

    + Assisting the Assistant/Associate Director of Operations with supervising the reactor operations license training and requalification program for each reactor at the NESC.

    + Coordinating with the Assistant Director of Engineering for periodic inspection and maintenance for the NESC reactors.

    + Supervising the completion of all reactor-relevant records for the NESC reactors, ensuring they are accurate and properly maintained in accordance with applicable regulations and policies.

    + Assisting the Assistant/Associate Director of Operations with maintenance of the Standard Operating Procedures for the NESC reactors, including periodic review to ensure all procedures are current and relevant.

    + Support and counsel of external users (commercial and research) accessing the reactor facilities.

    + Supervising the isotope production activities at the NESC with the support of the Reactor Staff.

    + Managing the isotope irradiation schedule.

    + Supervising the handling of irradiated materials.

    + Coordinating the isotope shipping preparations and schedule.

    + Support the NESC Assistant/Associate Director of Operations, as required.

    + Identifying potential problem areas and developing solutions.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    What we need:

    + Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Three years of related experience in nuclear engineering operations and maintenance of nuclear or electrical systems.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ​

     

    + Demonstrated leadership skills at supervisor level, or above.

    + Proficiency in oral and written communication.

    + Proficiency with MS Office products.

    + Proficiency with customer service.

    + Ability to work standing for extended period of time.

    + Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds at times.

    + Must be able to obtain and maintain a Senior Reactor Operator’s license on both NESC reactors.

    + Ability to multi-task and manage priorities in a dynamic research and radiation services environment.

    + Experience working in a Quality Assurance Program environment.

    Other Requirements:

    + Occasional on-call responsibilities.

    + Must live within a thirty-minute drive of the facility.
