The opportunity:
The Assistant Superintendent in the Paper Mill Finishing and Shipping department will have overall responsibility for the personnel, safety, environmental impact, quality, cost, and performance for finishing and shipping within the mill facility. In this position, you will lead and coordinate efforts and activities utilizing your knowledge and experience to achieve key performance metrics that support overall mill goals.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
* Lead and direct Finishing and Shipping daily operations in a safe and orderly manner to achieve quality and productivity goals
* Coordinate activities with production planning, maintenance, paper machines, and quality control to obtain optimum production and utilization of personnel and equipment
* Lead safety in department improving, maintaining, and ensuring compliance with the safety program for the department, ensuring compliance with OSHA and Smurfit Westrock regulations and guidelines
* Lead the Mill\u2019s Winder and Roll Handling Safety Program, WSSUP; maintaining and ensuring mill compliance with the program standards
* Manage environmental efforts to ensure compliance with regulations and permit requirements,
* Manage quality efforts to ensure product meets customer expectations and adherence to ISO program requirements
* Partner with area maintenance to ensure efficient troubleshooting, planning, and execution of routine repairs
* Oversee planning, scheduling, and execution of department maintenance outages
* Provide input and oversight for annual outage planning and coordination, ensure the annual outage for department is completed on time and within budget
* Review and analyze production reports to determine opportunity areas and implement solutions for problems and nonconformities
* Prepare and submit reports as required
* Collaborate with and assist the Shipping and Logistics Manager in the development and implementation of operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate operating problems, improve efficiency, and reduce cost.
* Collaborate and assist the Shipping and Logistics Manager with development of annual budgets and standards for cost measurement.
* Identify budget variances and close any gaps
* Lead and manage employee accountability and labor relations with salary and hourly reports through coordination and consultation with Human Resources and Shipping and Logistics Manager
* Partner with Human Resource Manager to ensure proper handling of employee relations issues in accordance with Divisional and Corporate policies and procedures
* Determine training needs and administer appropriate training programs for hourly employees
* Ensure execution of employee training and development
* Establish departmental goals that align with the mill\u2019s strategic goals.
* Manage and validate hourly work force schedules, trades and hours in Workforce, time keeping system
What you need to succeed:
* Minimum High School diploma or G.E.D.
* Bachelor\u2019s degree in engineering or related field is preferred
* Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
* Proven track record of leadership and project management skills leveraged to enable employees to achieve goals and objectives
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills conveying information effectively through written or verbal communication and receiving information through active listening or reading body language with the ability to navigate sensitive situations diplomatically and to maintain team morale and productivity, while aligning with company policies and goals.
* Strong problem-solving and process-analysis skills to evaluate data and make decisions to drive process improvements
