    Scope of Job

     

    The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences ( SMSS ) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) invites applications forthree tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, to begin in Fall 2026, based on theBrownsville campus—one position in Mathematics and two in Statistics.

     

    We seek candidates with strong research potential in any area of Mathematics or Statistics, with particular preference given to applicants specializing in Statistics for the two Statistics positions. Successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain a productive, independent research program with the potential to secure extramural funding, demonstrate excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and actively contribute to the growth and development of the School’s academic programs.

     

    Faculty in these positions are also expected to strengthen and complement the School’s Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications and to contribute to the academic and local community through mentorship, collaboration, and service aligned with the mission of UTRGV .

    The SMSS at the UTRGV comprises over 40 tenured and tenure-track faculty actively engaged in research across pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. The School offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Mathematics and Statistics, including Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications, M.S. in Applied Statistics and Data Science, and M.S. in Mathematics. Overall, SMSS has over 100 graduate students and around 280 undergraduate majors. With a strong focus on graduate education and high-quality research, SMSS plays an integral role in advancing the University’s goal of attaining Carnegie R1 status.     As a multi-campus academic unit, SMSS maintains a strong presence on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses of UTRGV . The positions associated with this search will be based on theBrownsville campus, a growing hub for research and academic excellence in South Texas

    Minimum Qualifications

    Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution (earned by the start date of the appointment).

     

    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

     

    Demonstrated potential for independent research and scholarly productivity in Mathematics or Statistics.

     

    Demonstrated potential for effective teaching and mentoring of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in Mathematics or Statistics.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Demonstrated experience in teaching and ability to use technology, innovative pedagogy, or evidence-based instructional practices to enhance student learning.

     

    Evidence of an active and productive research program with a record of, or clear potential for, publication in high-quality journals.

     

    Demonstrated potential to secure extramural research funding.

     

    Postdoctoral research experience demonstrating continued scholarly development.

    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
