The *Cytopathology department* at MD Anderson plays a vital role in early detection and diagnosis by processing, preparing, and evaluating a wide range of patient specimens with precision and consistency. Our team supports clinicians across the institution by ensuring high-quality cytologic samples, reliable pre-analytical processes, and timely workflow that directly impacts patient care and diagnostic accuracy.

As a *Medical Technician II*, you will contribute to this mission by performing critical specimen accessioning, assisting with FNA triage, preparing specialized materials such as cell blocks and density gradients, and supporting staining and equipment maintenance. Your role strengthens the integrity of our laboratory operations through meticulous quality control, proper documentation, equipment troubleshooting, and efficient workflow management. In Cytopathology, your technical expertise and attention to detail help ensure that each patient's sample is handled with accuracy, safety, and urgency.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelors in a science related field. The hours are Monday - Friday 9am - 5:30pm.

*JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES *

*Performs all job duties in accordance with established protocols*

- Accessions and processes Cytology specimens according to established procedures, assuring proper identification of specimens at all times; assists in procurement and triage of FNA samples as well as provides back up support in procedure rooms as needed

- Performs technical procedures such as cell block preparations, cell transfer and density gradient preparations for lymphoma marker studies

- Prepares reagents following precise instructions, sets up the stain hood daily, and assists with equipment maintenance

*Generates appropriate QC data per guidelines *

- Evaluates specimen integrity and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in accordance with departmental procedures

- Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance measures according to established policies and procedures, including instrument controls

- Cleans and disinfects glassware, laboratory equipment and accessories as needed; troubleshoots and services equipment according to specific protocols

*Completes all work assignments in a timely manner.*

- Prioritizes and organizes workflow, adjusting to daily workflows to meet productivity goals of the section and performing other duties as required

- Remains knowledgeable of processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving

- Assists with monitoring and documenting in the inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies
