    The Progressive Care Unit RN, as a professional practitioner, assumes the responsibility and accountability for delivering patient care to telemetry/progressive care patients. The Progressive Care Unit RN demonstrates the ability to make clinical judgments in an effective and efficient manner with supervision. This individual employs critical thinking and performance ability in the coordinator of patient care, consistently performs according to nursing standards, and is accountable in managing patient care and assisting others in the management of patient care. The Progressive Care Unit RN is sometimes also called a step-down nurse, cardiac stepdown, neuro stepdown, surgical stepdown and in some medical centers, the PCU is also known as a transition or intermedia unit.

     

    Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse (RN)

     

    The PCU RN is a highly skilled and compassionate nursing professional responsible for providing specialized care to patients requiring close monitoring and advanced nursing interventions. This role demands strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly to changes in patient condition. The RN works closely with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and support staff to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care in a dynamic environment.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients in the PCU

    • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, physical exams, health histories, and monitoring of complex conditions

    • Monitor patients for changes in condition and respond promptly to alarms, deterioration, or emergencies

    • Administer medications, IV therapies, and advanced treatments as prescribed

    • Document patient responses and changes in condition accurately in the electronic health record (EHR)

    • Collaborate with healthcare providers to develop and adjust individualized care plans

    • Educate patients and families on conditions, medications, and discharge instructions

    • Maintain adherence to infection control, safety, and quality standards

    • Respond promptly to emergencies such as rapid deterioration or code situations

    • Advocate for patients and uphold confidentiality and patient rights

    Minimum Requirements

    • Current Registered Nurse License in the state of practice

    • Minimum one year of professional nursing experience; PCU or step-down experience preferred

    • Completion of Amergis' Competency Program (if applicable)

    • Current BLS certification (ACLS preferred)

    • Proficiency in advanced patient monitoring and critical thinking skills

    • TB screening and health clearance (as required)

    • Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations

    • Successful completion of new hire orientation and PCU training

    • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations

    • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English

    • Basic computer literacy

    • Must be at least 18 years of age
