    Idaho Power (IPC) — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for _Pre-Apprentice Lineworkers_ . It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power.     What does a Pre-Apprentice Lineworker do for us?

     

    Pre-Apprentices will participate in rotational assignments across IPC’s service territories, gaining hands-on experience by working alongside various crews including Demand and Projects. These assignments will involve performing construction and maintenance tasks on overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines.

     

    Pre-Apprentices are eligible to apply for Full-Time Regular Apprentice Lineworker positions as they become available. Advancement to an Apprentice Lineworker role is contingent upon demonstrated aptitude, which will be assessed through on-the-job performance, professional attitude, and formal evaluations. Failure to demonstrate the required aptitude may result in termination of employment. Additionally, if a Pre-Apprentice does not secure an Apprentice Lineworker position within 12 months of hire, the employee may be released from the program.

    A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

    Knowledge of:

    + Construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment

    + Chemical safety

    + The purpose of commonly encountered materials, parts, and equipment used in line construction

    + safe work practices

    + Basic mechanical and electrical knowledge

    Skills in:

    + Basic use of personal computers

    + Interpersonal communications

    + The use of hand and power tools

    + Heavy equipment operation

    Ability to:

    + Perform basic arithmetic calculations

    + Maintain effective working relationships with other members of a work team

    + Maintain neat, accurate, and legible records

    + Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours

    + Work overtime at the discretion of the supervisor

    + Stand call as required by management

    + Learn and retain training provided

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education:

    + High school diploma or GED

    AND

    + Candidates must have graduated from a recognized Line School by November 14, 2025

    OR

    + Internal candidates must have previously graduated from a recognized Line School **_or_** have 2 years of relevant field operations experience while employed by Idaho Power **_or_** have 3 months of Utility Laborer work experience at Idaho Power with successful completion of the Utility Laborer self-study coursework **_or_** have 3 months of IPC Transmission and Distribution (T&D)/Project line crew work experience with successful completion of the Utility Laborer self-study coursework

    Experience:

    + 1 year of experience performing physical or construction labor

    OR

    + 1 year of experience working for a utility

    Preferred:

    + **_Experience working on or with a line crew performing groundman or apprentice duties_**

    + A combination of relevant experience to include heavy equipment operation

    + Commercial vehicle operation

    + Electrical wiring (AC or DC)

    + Construction labor

    + Use of hand tools and power tools

    + Demonstrated experience working extended hours in all weather conditions

    Licenses & Certifications:

    + Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

    + Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card prior to hire

    + Current DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 383 Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) prior to hire

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This position involves maintenance and repair of transformers at ground level and vault. This can require up to 150 lbs. push/pull activities, lifts up to 50 lbs., frequent kneeling, standing and crouching, as well as climbing into the vault. This job also involves climbing (up to) 50 ft. utility poles to install/repair, while carrying 40 lbs. safety gear. Mechanical and hand tools are used to dig holes up to 14 feet in which poles are placed via team lift. Cross arms, which require a team lift of 120 lbs., and other equipment will be installed/replaced on poles using a mag drill. Other activities required are loading and unloading ATV’s using a ramp, attaching wire, hotstick/shotgun use, hiking/carrying tools up to several miles per day, occasional digging and frequent above shoulder work including the use of a manual trimmer. Data entry is also required for up to 3 consecutive days to input all field work into record keeping software. To ensure the manufacturer's rated capacity of climbing hooks, ladders, and aerial equipment are not exceeded, applicants body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the DOT medical certificate.     ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Successful candidate will be required to work non-traditional hours, including daytime or evenings, weekdays, and/or weekends. Travel extensively with overnight stays and work hitches away from headquarters.
