    BAE Systems Ship Repair is seeking to hire Shipyard Management Interns this Winter at our San Diego, CA facility. Relocation will be offered, but housing is not provided.

     

    This is a eight-week internship targeting students currently enrolled in a maritime program requiring a short-term, hands-on experience in a shipyard environment. Relevant majors would include Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Maritime Affairs, and Mechanical Engineering programs at one of the following maritime academies such as but not limited to California Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Great Lakes Maritime Academy, State University of New York Maritime College, Webb Institute and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA).

    As an intern, you will:

    + Work within a diverse workforce and functional groups

    + Gain exposure to and understand the complexity of Navy Surface ships and various commercial vessels

    + Interact with team members within our company such as program management team members (ship superintendents, project managers, program managers, etc.), craft managers, craft supervisors, safety/chemist employees and other customers

    + Contribute to substantial work that will be beneficial to your academic and future professional careers

    + Experience shipyard production from the view point of the trades via rotational assingments with each core trade. Interns will operate in a supporting role to the trades ensuring educational exposure to the work the trades do and safety compliance at all times.

    + Shadow the Operations department to understand designated portions of a Navy surface ship repair package including the installation, modification, and repair of complex equipment and systems in Engineering, Crew Berthing, Electronic/Combat System Suites, and Mission Control spaces

    + Gather data for reports and analyses. Verify source material for authenticity purposes

    Work Environment:

    + Frequently exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat

    + Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places

    + The noise level in the shipyard environment is usually loud; office environment is usually low to moderate

     

    Temporary employees generally are not eligible for BAE Systems benefits but can elect to participate in the 401(k) savings plan. Temporary employees working 20 hours per week are eligible for medical benefits, the employee assistance program, and business travel accident insurance.

    Required Education, Experience, & Skills

    + Candidates must be currently enrolled at a Maritime Academy or University pursuing an accredited degree in technical disciplines leading to an Undergraduate degree in the fields of Naval Architecture, Maritime Affairs, Marine Engineering, or related fields.

    + Ability to work under the direction of area managers and trade supervisors for daily taskings and functions.

    + Familiarity with current, computer applications and technologies in applicable engineering disciplines.

    + Ability to develop problem-solving skills

    + Ability to develop and maintain effective, professional relationships, and communicate effectively

    + Ability to access shipboard spaces via vertical/inclined ladders and through compartments with limited overhead and/or confined spaces

    Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

    + Microsoft Office Suite

    + Entry level knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures within the related fields of engineering

    + Entry level knowledge of ship systems and arrangements

     

    Pay Information

     

    Full-Time Salary Range: $35090 - $47410

     

    Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
