Road and Surface/Roadside Maintenance
+ Maintainsand reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulderswith gravel,bituminous, and concrete road surfaces;maintainstraffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair,culvert cleaning,and guardrailrepair; maintainsroadsides, installs catch basins,places and removes Adopt-A- Highway bags,performs drainage and shoulderrepair.
+ Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.
+ Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and traveling public.
+ Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside – planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal.Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.
Snow & Ice
+ Maintains roadways for snow and ice control removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slipper conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
+ Prepares and inspects winter equipment – maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.
+ Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping on bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps and roadways.
+ Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Minimum Qualifications
A Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.
**Part 1:** The experience needed to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:
+ One (1)yearofexperienceperforming activities in snow and ice,soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridgemaintenance, signs,orrelated activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment,or farm experience).
OR
+ Successful completion of aHeavy Equipment Operation and MaintenanceProgram (of at least60 semester credits; or90 quartercredits) willsubstitute for one year ofexperience.(Inorder foreducation courseworkto be considered in lieuofwork experienceyoumust submit acopy of yourtranscripts).
AND
+ Workingknowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understandoral and written information; communicate withemployees andthe general public in-personor via two-way radio and other electronic devices; andto maintain routine written logs and simple records.
**Part 2:** Applicants that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. Candidates that have previously taken and passed the math and reading assessment may be exempt from re-testing. Please check with your district HR office.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous MnDOT experience working as a laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
Weather elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
