    The Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer (EVP & CMO) of Atlantic Health is a pivotal member of the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer. This role serves as the principal clinical strategist and champion of quality, safety, and innovation across the enterprise, guiding the organization’s clinical vision and ensuring alignment with Atlantic Health’s mission to deliver high-quality, value-based care.

     

    The CMO leads system-wide efforts to advance clinical excellence, drive performance improvement, and foster a culture of accountability and collaboration among employed providers and medical staff. With oversight of inpatient quality, patient safety, medical education, and clinical research, the CMO plays a central role in shaping care delivery models that enhance patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and satisfaction. This leader is a clinical voice with administration, representing the opinions of practitioners system-wide, and working closely with clinicians and educators on healthcare policy, finances and operations.

     

    As a key architect of Atlantic Health’s clinical strategy, the CMO partners closely with other executive leaders to translate strategic priorities into actionable initiatives aligned with long and short-term priorities and goals. This includes guiding the development of care pathways, supporting transitions of care, and optimizing value-based reimbursement strategies. The CMO also serves as the system’s voice in medical affairs, representing Atlantic Health in local, state, and national forums, and building trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

     

    The CMO must be a consummate communicator and nurture relationships proactively with the senior leadership team, physicians, clinical team members, and staff. They will continually need to engage, seek understanding and buy-in, guide and influence to solidify commitment and execution on needed changes and priorities. They will have demonstrated experience in creating a cohesive and collaborative practice culture that prides itself on being the preeminent leader with regard to patient access, quality, safety, value, and patient experience.

    This is a rare opportunity for a visionary clinical leader to influence the future of healthcare in one of the nation’s most respected and innovative health systems.

    The EVP & CMO is responsible for the following:

    + Ensure alignment with overall system goals, translating strategic priorities into actionable clinical initiatives that drive quality, safety, and performance. Leads the strategic planning for medical and clinical education, and clinical research.

    + Provide oversight to system-wide clinical and general administrative policies and procedures.

    + Drive next-generation clinical operating performance and innovation in the in-patient environment, in collaboration with the EVP, Chief Physician Executive and through direct oversight of the VP, Quality and site CMO’s, to deliver top decile results in quality and patient satisfaction.

    + Leverage inpatient care pathways to deliver superior value-based operating, quality and financial results.

    + Lead employed providers and medical staff with integrated unification of standards for professionalism, accountability and care delivery across the enterprise, to deliver superior care coordination and quality results.

    + Provide clinical input into system planning and budgeting processes; convey needs of providers and medical staff tempered by economics, staffing, and political considerations.

    + Strive for highest quality of systems of care, including outcomes, satisfaction, and efficiency through peer-review committees, education programs, and standards to impact quality and patient care in a “just culture”.

    + Design and implement administrative systems to support medical staff committees and credentialing and assure compliance with medical staff bylaws, as well as DOH and The Joint Commission requirements.

    + Lead Quality and Patient Safety efforts across the enterprise, serving as the single source of quality reporting across all domains, with responsibility for network performance across all relevant national benchmarks and competitive ratings.

    + Promote innovations in new care-delivery models to improve inpatient operating efficiency and patient satisfaction expressed through key metrics, such as Length of Stay (LOS), readmit rates and HCAHPS.

    + In collaboration with the Chief Physician Executive and Chief Operating Officer provide input on inpatient Value-Based Reimbursement (VBR) strategies, goals and contracted incentive language to improve extraction of VBR incentives in the acute care environment.

    + In collaboration with the Chief Physician Executive, create superior transitions of care strategies in both pre-acute and post-acute domains as they interface with the inpatient domain.

    + Lead the Medical Education department and advance continuing health-care education programs to ensure compliance with hospital policies and accrediting organization requirements.

    + Drive an aggressive medical and Graduate Medical Education (GME) agenda by strengthening and expanding Atlantic Health residency and fellowship programs, as well as other future para-health professional programs, thereby ensuring a superior educational environment, national reputation, and a pipeline for future community providers.

    + Drive an aggressive clinical research agenda, leveraging the talent and assets of the physician group, service lines and our medical centers, to develop a superior community research program that advantages our patients and delivers national recognition.

    + Develop medical and administrative policies and procedures through membership on various medical staff and multi-disciplinary committees.

    + Act as a hospital spokesperson in local, state, and regional medical affairs and make presentations as requested.

    + Contribute to the development of system goals; regularly review and appraise changes in system short- and long-term goals and objectives.

    + Build relationships and serve on committees and/or Boards within the community as appropriate.

They will possess the leadership acumen to unify diverse clinical teams, the operational expertise to drive measurable outcomes, and the interpersonal skills to build trust across a wide range of stakeholders—from bedside caregivers to board members.

     

    Background and Experiences

     

    The ideal candidate is a highly respected physician executive who possesses dynamic leadership skills and administrative expertise. This individual can lead in a manner that supports and contributes to the success of the health system and the communities they serve. They will exemplify the qualities of leadership, collaboration, communication and fairness. In addition, they will possess:

     

    + Fifteen (15) years or more of hospital and/or health system physician-executive experience, including responsibility for fiscal and medical staff management, within a high-performing, integrated system of care that includes multiple hospitals, a pluralistic medical staff and academic endeavors

    + Clinical and leadership stature that establishes immediate respect, credibility, and effective relationships with employed, private practice, and academic physicians, as well as practitioners, PAs, CRNAs, clinicians, and learners.

    + Ability to identify areas for improvement and then formulate and implement strategies across employed and/or affiliated partners to support clinical programs and quality initiatives.

    + Demonstrated experience in aligning, scaling, expanding and sustaining innovative quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives that achieve superior clinical quality, favorable financial outcomes, and high patient/physician/and employee satisfaction.

    + Knowledge of the key components of an effective measurement process, including the identification of key metrics and the use of data.

    + A highly strategic “systems thinker” who demonstrates an understanding, innovative thinking, and an expertise with various operating entities of an integrated healthcare system – including both ambulatory and inpatient operations.

    + Proven ability to develop a high-performance culture that is focused on nimbly adapting vision, strategy, and culture to a dynamic healthcare environment. Influences, motivates, and inspires the organization to build new capabilities, achieve ambitious goals, and perform at its best as the landscape of healthcare changes

    + Knowledge of key regulatory issues that influence or impact quality and safety in healthcare delivery.

    + Fosters an environment of health equity and excellent patient experience while ensuring a culture of high reliability in regard to patient safety and quality.

    + Strong visibility and engagement across all levels of a complex delivery system. Consistently demonstrates high levels of emotional intelligence. Ability to exercise exemplary tact, diplomacy, and political sensitivity when dealing with high-level internal and external executives, physicians and agencies.

    + Experience working across clinical and business units from a position of influence and with a high degree of transparency.

    + Excellent communication and facilitation skills; interpersonal skills to effect, sell, and manage change and growth. Ability to gain consensus and “buy in” with skilled interaction across broad, diverse groups.

    + Strong presentation skills and comfortable speaking in all group settings. Effective in translating new ideas.

    + Proven ability to identify, recruit, and retain strong, intelligent, creative leaders and forge them into a cohesive leadership team. Excellent mentoring skills. Ability to gain consensus and “buy in”.
