  • Staff Software Engineer (Backend/Infra)

    Ganymede (San Francisco, CA)

    Apply Now

Ganymede is the lab data and integration platform for the life sciences, with a mission of improving the world through better healthcare outcomes. We believe that the highest leverage approach to speed up science is through better software. Today, we’re a leading startup in the life sciences software space with cutting-edge cloud technology and a rapidly growing client base.

As a staff software engineer focused on our backend and infrastructure, you'll drive the build of the Ganymede product with modern cloud infrastructure, AI tooling, and rich scientific data management products; architect our technical strategy; and leave your mark on the company, as well as the biotech industry as a whole. You'll wear many hats as one of our skilled engineers:

+ Engineering work will span the stack, with a heavy focus on backend/infra, and maybe some direct work with biotech data too! (No experience needed in hardware or science - just a willingness to learn what it takes in a rapidly evolving startup environment.) You’ll wear many hats and may also delve into security, dev tools, release engineering, and more.

+ Day-to-day work will be a combination of scrappy implementation to maintain our pace, and careful strategic planning to avoid and reduce tech debt in the future.

+ You'll interface with our founders and customers as we prioritize our roadmap and scope out the exact details of our releases. In a technical environment like Ganymede, engineering and product are inseparable.

+ You'll also be a key determinant of our culture, and will help us grow and set norms for the business as we scale

No biotech experience is needed - just an interest in improving people's lives through medicine!

    Requirements

    What we look for:

+ 8+ years of experience working in a backend, infra, or full-stack role

+ Experience developing in JS/TS web frameworks, serving infrastructure, and cloud infrastructure tooling like Terraform

+ Demonstrated staff-level leadership on projects or in a domain: successfully taking net-new projects from zero to one as the primary technical leader, ability to construct and sell a vision for projects across both engineering and commercial considerations, mentorship of juniors on these projects improve their technical and design contributions, experience interfacing with and leading cross-functional stakeholders such as product or design

+ Excellent collaboration skills in both written and verbal forms, as well as via clear, cleanly written code

+ Experience automating away toil using CI/CD and ensuring consistent quality via end-to-end automated testing

+ Skilled at identifying bottlenecks and optimizing code, queries, and infrastructure configurations to ensure consistent performance and stability across releases

+ Genuine desire to make an impact generally, and interest in advancing the health and welfare of people

+ Kindness, empathy, and low ego

Pluses (but not required by any means!):

+ Experience developing using infrastructure as code (Terraform, Cloud formation) to scale security and compliance

+ Familiarity with developing cloud-native applications using Docker and Kubernetes

+ Experience developing using workflow pipeline software such as Airflow and Prefect

+ Experience developing release engineering tools

    Our Principles

+ Improving lives through better medicine: we’re intensely mission-focused, and are building a highly scalable business to make an impact on society.

+ Kindness: we come from a future where all human beings are treated with dignity, inclusivity, and active empathy, so we apply that to ourselves first in how we hire and treat each other.

+ Transparency: we are one team, and hold that openness is foundational to ensuring fairness, and that our actions tie to our shared mission.

+ Accountability: we believe that trust is the basis for building anything substantial, and stems from our being accountable to ourselves and each other.

    Benefits

+ Compensation for this role will range from $200-260k salary, based on seniority

+ Remote-first role and culture, with periodic reimbursed travel for the team to meet together

+ Unlimited PTO & sick days

+ Excellent health benefits (Medical, Dental & Vision), life, and disability insurance

+ Family leave (Maternity, Paternity, Medical, Caregiver)

+ Home office and fitness stipends
