    Job Description

    Performs psychological / behavioral assessments and psychotherapeutic interventions and other procedures of patients. Conducts research in accordance with IRB guidelines and approvals. In this role, the oncology psychologist will have the opportunity to provide essential psychological services to cancer patients and their loved ones during their cancer care trajectory, surveillance, and end of life care.

    Job Responsibility

    + Conduct comprehensive psychology consultations with cancer patients and survivors, their caregivers and families to assess their cancer-related psychosocial stressors and mental health needs.

    + Determine appropriateness of referrals given the scope of the psycho-oncology practice at the Cancer Institute and the needs of patients, survivors, caregivers, couples and families.

    + Make appropriate referrals to specialized mental health and substance abuse treatments as well as couples and family therapy when clinically indicated.

    + Provide cancer focused evidence-based brief psychotherapies to cancer patients, caregivers, couples, and families to address illness-related stressors and their corresponding psychosocial challenges.

    + Conduct crisis assessment and intervention.

    + Collaborate with cancer care teams, social work, and psychiatry in the behavioral management of cancer patients with mental health problems to ensure coordinated and holistic care for patients.

    + Maintain a professional and compassionate demeanor while working with patients, their caregivers, and families, creating a supportive and safe environment for them to share their concerns and emotions.

    + Adhere to ethical and legal standards in all aspects of patient care and maintain patient confidentiality.

    + Stay up to date on current research and best practices in oncology psychology, implementing new assessment and psychotherapy techniques as appropriate.

    + Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and case conferences to discuss patient care and treatment plans.

    + Provide education, training, and supervision of psycho-oncology psychology externs.

    + Attend multidisciplinary meetings as required.

    + Functions as a primary therapist and member of an interdisciplinary team; provides patient care, individual or group, in accordance with accepted principles of psychotherapy.

    + Selects formal and informal assessment methods appropriate for age, medical condition and functional status to assess patient's psychological status.

    + Administers psychological assessments and interprets results to determine nature of problem(s) and recommend treatment necessary.

    + Evaluates children to obtain information necessary for planning and intervention in areas of cognition, learning and behavior; determines appropriate recommendations and treatment for patients evaluated.

    + Presents treatment plan and educates patient, family, and related hospital staff of procedures in a manner consistent with level of understanding.

    + Consults with referring counselors regarding patient progress, and meets with rehabilitation counselors regarding patient placement.

    + Evaluates care provided for positive patient outcomes.

    + Documents patient interventions according to department and hospital policies and procedures.

    + Performs a variety of administrative tasks, including but not limited to correspondence, attending meetings, maintains records and chart.

    Job Qualification

    + Doctor of Psychology required. Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree from APA-accredited program in clinical, counseling, or clinical-health psychology.

    + Current License to practice as a Psychologist in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.

    + 1-3 years of relevant experience, required.

    + Experience providing empirically supported psychotherapies to medical patients, couples and families.

    + Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

    The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining a team member's base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity).

     

    The salary range for this position is $112,800-$125,000/year
